About this listen
Learn about REM sleep with iMinds insightful audio knowledge series. REM is an important component of sleep. But sleep itself is a difficult phenomenon to study because it is such an insular process. Dreams in particular are highly elusive for the researcher of sleep. As dreaming is a "state of mind", theories concerning it are frustratingly convoluted and highly theory-based, with any advancement unlikely to be supported by hard evidence. However, what scientists can do is measure the physical reactions that take place in our bodies and by our bodies when we are sleeping. This helps us understand what happens to us when we sleep and what REM is all about.
From close monitoring of sleeping subjects, scientists have been able to discover an arc that we all go through in our unconscious state. Basically, sleep is divided into two cycles: REM and NREM. The former stands for "rapid eye movement" and the latter stands for "non-rapid eye movement".
Perfect to listen to while commuting, exercising, shopping or cleaning the house.. iMinds brings knowledge to your MP3 with 8 minute information segments to whet your mental appetite and broaden your mind.
iMinds offers 12 main categories; become a Generalist by increasing your knowledge of Business, Politics, People, History, Pop Culture, Mystery, Crime, Culture, Religion, Concepts, Science and Sport. Clean and concise, crisp and engaging, discover what you never knew you were missing.

Story
Hallucinations don’t belong wholly to the insane. Much more commonly, they are linked to sensory deprivation, intoxication, illness, or injury. Here Dr. Sacks weaves together stories of his patients and of his own mind-altering experiences to illuminate what hallucinations tell us about the organization and structure of our brains, how they have influenced every culture’s folklore and art, and why the potential for hallucination is present in us all.

Story
From 1990 to 1995 Dr. Rick Strassman conducted U.S. Government-approved and funded clinical research at the University of New Mexico in which he injected 60 volunteers with DMT, one of the most powerful psychedelics known. His detailed account of those sessions is an extraordinarily riveting inquiry into the nature of the human mind and the therapeutic potential of psychedelics. DMT, a plant-derived chemical found in the psychedelic Amazon brew, ayahuasca, is also manufactured by the human brain. In Strassman's volunteers, it consistently produced near-death and mystical experiences.

Editorial reviews
Sleep is a difficult subject for scientists to study, but a major discovery was made by Nathaniel Kleitman and Eugene Aserinksy when they identified rapid eye movement, so named for the quick motions made by the eye during sleep. It is during REM sleep where dreams occur and the brain is most active. This iMinds production is a brief but illuminating overview of REM sleep, performed with a satisfying calm by Elouise Rothwell. Her soothing style seems fitting with the subject matter, and she relaxes the reader even as she informs.

Story
The idea that “thoughts become things” has become a meme in popular culture. It’s held as a firm proposition in metaphysics, and some spiritual teachers ascribe infinite powers to the mind. But are these claims scientifically accurate? What does the scientific evidence tell us about the scope of the human mind to transform thoughts into reality?

Story
An astonishing new science called neuroplasticity is overthrowing the centuries-old notion that the human brain is immutable. Psychiatrist and psychoanalyst, Norman Doidge, MD, traveled the country to meet both the brilliant scientists championing neuroplasticity and the people whose lives they've transformed - people whose mental limitations or brain damage were seen as unalterable.

Story
Consciousness is our gateway to experience: it enables us to recognize Van Gogh’s starry skies, be enraptured by Beethoven’s Fifth, and stand in awe of a snowcapped mountain. Yet consciousness is subjective, personal, and famously difficult to examine: philosophers have for centuries declared this mental entity so mysterious as to be impenetrable to science. In The Ravenous Brain, neuroscientist Daniel Bor departs sharply from this historical view, and proposes a new model for how consciousness works.

In Do Zombies Dream of Undead Sheep?, neuroscientists and zombie enthusiasts Timothy Verstynen and Bradley Voytek apply their neuro-know-how to dissect the puzzle of what has happened to the zombie brain to make the undead act differently than their human prey. Combining tongue-in-cheek analysis with modern neuroscientific principles, Verstynen and Voytek show how zombism can be understood in terms of current knowledge regarding how the brain works.

Short yet intersting
This is a short audio book on phases of sleep. It's been a while that I listened to the audio book 'Why We Sleep?' by Matthew Walker, which was a wonderful elaborate good quality book and actually one of the best books I ever listened to.
This audio book vaguely reminded me of some of the things Matthew Walker discussed in his book. Though this is a really short audio book, it does briefly explain sleep cycles. I enjoyed listening to it.

Rapid Eye Movements in Sleep
This iMinds listen is very interesting and makes me want to learn more about REM sleep, and also hope for more research to be done on the subject. The discovery that not only humans experience rapid eye movements in sleep and different phases during sleep is also interesting. The studies by scientists of what goes on in our bodies as we sleep is already reaping significant rewards, as in the discovery of sleep apnea and other sleep disorders. Great short audio.
