Con estas palabras iniciaba Edmundo Valdés la primera reseña de Pedro Páramo, aparecida el 30 de marzo de 1955 y conservada por Juan Rulfo entre sus papeles.

Esta novela de Unamuno, posiblemente más famosa que ninguna por su ruptura de la cuarta pared y el diálogo que el autor mantiene con su propio personaje, es una reflexión de corte existencialista que parte del enamoramiento de Augusto Pérez por Eugenia. Los dos personajes se cruzan casualmente por la calle y este encuentro despierta la conciencia y los sentidos de Augusto, antes aletargados durante mucho tiempo.

Primer libro de Camilo José Cela, supuso un valioso punto de partida para la narrativa española de posguerra. La vida trágica de su arquetípico protagonista, gobernada por la más salvaje violencia, era un comentario indirecto sobre la barbarie padecida por los españoles durante la recién concluida Guerra Civil, al tiempo que daba carta de naturaleza a una tendencia literaria renovadora, luego conocida como «tremendismo».

En el Madrid de los años inmediatamente posteriores a la Guerra Civil, los destinos de numerosos individuos de varias clases sociales y con diferentes actitudes ante la vida desfilan en una secuencia de breves y fascinantes viñetas narrativas. Con la ciudad como personaje, el conjunto es el retrato de una sociedad en la que el estraperlo, el hambre, la prostitución y el miedo conviven con efímeros destellos de ternura y humor.

Galdós siempre vivió entregado a la tarea de escribir. Uno entre los muchos hitos de su dilatada trayectoria es Misericordia, que, por la precisión de sus descripciones y el nítido trasfondo psicológico de sus personajes, se erige en una muestra señera del naturalismo español. La historia de Benigna, la fiel sirvienta que mendiga para mantener a su señora sin que ésta lo sepa, permite a Galdós reflexionar sobre la religiosidad hipócrita y rutinaria de la burguesía en contraposición a la generosidad y la altura moral de una persona humilde.

Rulfo comenta los relatos que sigue escribiendo en cartas a su novia Clara Aparicio. En 1951 se publica el séptimo, "Diles que no me maten", en la revista América. Gracias a la primera beca que Rulfo recibe del Centro Mexicano de Escritores puede terminar los ocho que aparecerán con los previos en 1953, en el libro titulado El Llano en llamas, dedicado a Clara. Dos relatos más, aparecidos en revistas en 1955, serán incluidos en la edición de 1970.
