About this listen

From the New York Times bestselling author of The Only Good Indians is a chilling historical horror novel tracing the life of a vampire who haunts the fields of the Blackfeet reservation looking for justice.

A diary, written in 1912 by a Lutheran Pastor is discovered within a wall. What it unveils is a slow massacre, a chain of events that go back to 217 Blackfeet dead in the snow. Told in transcribed interviews by a Blackfeet named Good Stab, who shares the narrative of his peculiar life over a series of confessional visits. This is an American Indian revenge story written by one of the new masters of horror, Stephen Graham Jones.

A brilliant novel with an outstanding production

I loved every little detail about this story, and the audio production kicks it up a notch. I cannot recommend this audiobook enough.

Amazing

What a wonderful take on a vampire story. The underlying messages of religion and colonization… so good… 10 out of 10

WOW!! I need to re-read already

I got this book because of all the great reviews. And WoW, What a gem this was. I was so surprised how this book read, I really felt like I was listening to an actual diary/journal of Good Stab..The parallel of the actual historical horror of the masacre of man and buffalo, then bringing the vampire horror to the show, was horrifying and compelling to no end. It's a book you can never know where it is going, so you cannot put it down until you know... and then do you ever know....WOW

The best book that I have read in years

I find it difficult to gather all of my thoughts on this book. Every time I think I know what I want to say, more occurs to me, or things re-arrange in my mind. This is clearly the best book I've read in a very long time. It is very seldom these days that a book is so good that when I have to stop reading, I keep thinking about it. I listened to the audio, which was brilliant, and several times found myself sitting in the car, not getting out, or going in to work, or home, wherever it was I parked.

It started slowly, and drew me in. This is even harder without spoilers... Over the course of the book I found myself coming to care about characters, only to come to loathe them, and then understand them. I found the arctic loneliness of Shelley's Frankenstein and elements of Stokers Dracula. I have a Weasel Plume T-shirt on the way. I own exactly two shirts based on someone else's novels. Both of them, as it turns out, were novels written by Stephen Graham Jones.

This book, though... historical, the voices so perfect, the name choices... the glimpses into a lost time, the strength, and weakness, of the human will. The depths of vengeance possible.

This is clearly the most unique modern vampire novel I've experienced. It is next-level storytelling. You will never forget this story. The voices, provided by Shane Ghostkeeper, Marin Ireland, and Owen Teale will be living in my head for a very long time. Thank you Good Stab, Three Persons, and so many others.

Highest possible recommendation.

A veritable masterpiece.

Everything that came before this must have been leading up to it. The best vampire novel. One of the best novels.

Rich and beautiful mythology, bone-deep pain and generational grief, and dark, dark magic.

Why not 5 stars? Only because I just finished it and, as the highest score, I reserve five stars for truly life-changing books, books that make me or the world permanently and significantly different. But, this is a solid, SOLID 4.5! After I sit with this a while, I may have to adjust my rating. I'm allowing for the extra enthusiasm I'm feeling, having just finished it.
There are so many things I loved about the book but I don't want to describe any of them because I don't want to accidentally give any spoilers. But it was fantastic.
Also, I am not usually one to recommend an audiobook over text but, in this case, I feel like the narration significantly added to the work. Somewhere, I saw a criticism that a reader (who still loved the book, I believe) experienced some confusion because of the different voices and the different time periods. And, I can imagine that happening if my attention waned while reading. But, the different narrators in the audiobook made these transitions effortless and I enjoyed the performers voices and their competence very much. The whole experience seemed to come alive in an extra dimension that I may not have experienced as easily reading it from a page. I am looking forward to reading it, also.
I will definitely be rereading and relistening to this one. And, I can't wait to discuss it with someone who has already read it or listened to it. I really want to say more but I won't. Bravo, Mr. Jones!
(I'm using the star system as follows: 0 = trash, I read it but I wish I hadn't, 1 = tolerable as a distraction but little more, 2 = an OK read, preferable to not reading but I'm not likely to recommend it, 3 = a good and enjoyable read, I probably would recommend it 4 = important, enhancing, and/ or a great read, I'd strongly recommend it and may read it again, 5 = transcendent, incomparable, and/ or life changing.)

Stark, poetic horror

Jones is a master author. His way with words leaves me outside, standing alone in the cold wilderness, wondering what just punched through me.
