Publisher's summary

When Herny York found 99 cupboards hidden behind his bedroom wall, he never dreamed they were doors to entirely new worlds! Unfortunately, Henry's discovery freed an ancient, undying witch, whose hunger for power would destroy every world connected to the cupboards and every person whom Henry loves. Henry must seek out the legendary Chestnut King for help. Everything has a price, however, and the Chestnut King;s desire may be as dangerous as the witch herself.

N. D. Wilson concludes a remarkable, worlds-spanning journey that began with one boy and 100 avenues to adventure.

Literary Magic

This entire series was captivating. I was spellbound from start to finish. The Chestnut King was a perfect climactic ending and kept me on the edge of my seat. I love this series and would recommend it for readers of all ages.

Interesting Ending to the Series

I read that the author had a brain tumor. The protagonist in this series actually has a kind of problem that is buried in his head. I wonder if the author put some of his own experiences the protagonist’s problems in a kind of symbolic way. The stories are not very deep but do have a lot to say about the fear of death and pain and how that can keep us from really living. Family, friends, self-sacrifice, confidence, and perseverance through pain are themes throughout.

People who enjoy action and super heroes and family friendly fun will enjoy the series. I am fifty but the stories seem to really be written for kids ten to fifteen, a coming of age story for the male protagonist who is about 13 through most of the stories. The stories do have a lot of violence but are not written too graphically.

The narrator sometimes misunderstands sarcasm. His voice and intonation sometimes sound better suited towards a younger children’s book. This took away somewhat from the book’s enjoyability. He is not so badly suited that I am returning the books as I have done with others. His voice is pleasant and entertaining for some characters or circumstances but silly or annoying and too slow for others. The director and narrator should pay better attention to these details.

A Storyteller

N. D. Wilson is a master storyteller who weaves themes of friendship, self-sacrifice, and discovery in his descriptive coming-of-age tale that weaves in and out of Henry, Kansas, and a fantasy world in the final book of his 100 Cupboard series. I highly recommend this.

One of the best since...

The Chestnut King is the finale to a wonderful trilogy and Nathan Wilson is probably the best author of this genre since Tolkein and Lewis.

Very well and clearly narrated... Listened to it several times now and it doesn't get stale.

LOVED it!

Russell Horton is an excellent narrator and made each character come alive. There were some good surprised at the end and left me feeling satisfied. My children (8.5 & 10) are a few chapters behind me and loving it as still
well. I can't wait to hear their thoughts add they finish the book!
