About this listen

When life gives you oranges, you make orange juice...or keep them on the counter to grow old and eventually get thrown away. When it gives you a demonic master, you become a warlock; that's what I did anyway. My name is Benjamin, but you can call me Big Daddy Ben - no one else does.

I was midway through my 20s and living a relatively normal life when everything changed. No, I wasn’t accepted into some weird warlock school for gifted adults. Technology failed, all of it, even simple stuff like bicycles. It all broke apart as if an unseen force was dismantling all those wonderful inventions we took for granted. It was magic of course. Magic was reentering the world at an accelerating pace. You didn’t need to live in a fantasy castle or attend online potion brewing classes to realize it; just peeking out the front window and watching your neighbor get their head blown off by an energy beam would do the trick.

This is the start of my (LitRPG) adventure and how I became known to everyone, even your mom, as the One-Armed Warlock.

good story with inadvertently evil MC

This is a great story that occures directly after a magically induced apocalypse with an MC who is kinda put on the path of being evil.

An Irreverent Romp and Love Letter to RPGs.

Good fun. That's really all you need to know... But I'll keep writing. In a time where I was unable to meet with my DnD group for over a year, this audio book was an excellent and welcome substitute. Durl White has a certain slap-dash style to his writing, that actually works in the Lit-RPG genre, as he is extremely aware of his own idiosyncrasies.

There is no obvious super objective to this story, which would have been problematic in most cases, but that also works in this specific instance. The fact that the reader is aware of the One Armed Warlock's level progression, abilities, skills, and loot, always provides a sense of progress, despite the fact that it often isn't clear where the story is going. And, honestly, the sort of "side quest overdose" that this book is, in no way detracts from the enjoyment of it. It reminds me of starting up a fresh game in Skyrim and saying "Right, we're going to play a game where I murder every NPC I come across, because I want their sweet loot." Or, better yet... that time that you and the DnD gang decided to to run a chaotic evil campaign and discovered, "Huh... You know what. I make a pretty good sociopath."

This...is basically the comedic chaotic evil DnD game we all WISH we could have.

As for the performance, BJ Whimpy is delivers a quick pace, with great comedic timing, and an awesome array of character voices. His slight, natural Pacific Northwestern American regional dialect, crisp baritone, and wide vocal range works really well for this genre, and comedy in general. He is an absolute delight to listen to. It's really nice to hear a narrator that isn't strictly Midwestern American Standard, and it was honestly refreshing. I'll have to keep an ear open for his other work.

So, if you're still reading this review, trying to figure out if it's worth the price... Drop that credit on this bad boy and get in on the wicked good fun.

The best book of the year

I would recommend this book to anyone who loves playing fantasy RPG‘s and wanted to know what it was like to go through one. When I finish this book I was left with fear that there was nothing to continue on the story. I am so happy that there is a second one in the series and I certainly hope there are more to come

Must Listen To

This book is such a welcomed change to the regular books in this genre. I love that Ben isn't the typical good character that saves everyone that he comes across. I'm highly anticipating the second book to release on Audible.

very good

I loved it, hearing it from the villian POV is awesome, plus your rooting for him, so that makes him the hero!!!

Good for what it is.

I didn't finish the book since it wasn't exactly what I normally like listening to but I won't detract from it either. The other reviews are right. It was on the edge of a parody with heavy sarcasm and was fun and light while listening. I just like my books with a little more grit.

Wow!! Lol

This book is the total opposite from the main stream apocalypse novel, dark, witty, funny and a little creepy when it comes to green skin and a part of the body that has cough 4 parts cough 0.o narration is on point and would highly recommend this book if you like dark humor.

Dark, gallows humor and grotesque tour de fart!

Cons:
- The cover art isn't much to be desired. Almost dismissed the book altogether, good thing I read the reviews and saw the star ratings. Maybe itchy and scratchy show art from simpsons could work? Ren and stimpy perhaps?

Pros:
- If you are into absurd immature satire humor with a lot of darkness sprinkled like msg in chinese food? You are in for a teat! (msg is great, don't hate!)
- Tired of getting a boner when the sex scene pops in? This was made for you!
- Bj Whimpey you marvelous fuck of a narrator, great job on the voices! Very well made and professional. Multiple voices for different characters.
- Tired of 2020? For 10 hrs and 38 mins, you can forget that the whole world went bat shit crazy and that your life is now a cluster fuck of insanity! Remember escapism is the best! In the recesses of your mind, everything is fine and dandy.
- What are you waiting for? Stop masturbating and buy the book.
