About this listen

In times past there was an Aboriginal man called Cumbo Gunnerah. His people called him The Red Kangaroo. He was a clever chief and a mighty fighter (this man from Gunnedah). Later, the white people of this place called him The Red Chief. It would be hard to find a more satisfying hero than the young warrior Red Kangaroo, who by his mental and physical prowess became a chief of his tribe – the revered and powerful Red Chief of the Gunnedah district. His story is a first-rate tale of adventure but it is something more – a true story handed down from generation to generation by its hero's tribe and given by the last survivor, King Bungaree, to the white settlers of the district.©1953 The Estate of Ion Idriess. Editorial reviews

The young warrior Red Kangaroo grew to be the chief of the Gunnedar tribe through his valor, intelligence, and physical prowess. He would later be known as the legendary Red Chief of the Gunnedah district, and the story of his adventures is one that has been handed down from generation to generation by his tribe. It is not only an epic tale, but also a unique record of the relationships between the aboriginals and white settlers of his time. Narrator James Condon's muscular performance is informal without being casual, and his distinct accent adds to Red Kangaroo's mystique. Condon particularly excels at the many action scenes, his pacing and delivery have a definite blockbuster quality.

Every Australian should read/listen to this book

Where does The Red Chief rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

The Red Chief was one of our family's favorite audiobooks, we enjoyed it from beginning to end - even the small children.

What did you like best about this story?

We enjoyed the suspense, the highly descriptive images, and the respect that we gained for the Australian Aboriginal through reading and understanding their original way of life.

Which scene was your favorite?

There were many great scene's in this book, its hard to pick a favorite, but I guess the stand out scene is where the Red Chief rescues his tribe from destruction through quick and clever decision making, and goes on to strengthen his tribe and give them long standing security.
