Publisher's summary

A legend among Vermont cops, Joe Gunther has solved more local whodunits than a whole squad of detectives. But his latest case takes him and his team off their Brattleboro home turf, 42 miles west, to chip-on-its-shoulder, blue-collar Bennington.

On the edge of town, Gunther encounters the lifeless body of Michelle Fisher. Her corpse, pale and seemingly at peace, offers him no clues about who she was or how she died. There are no signs of violence, no disorder. Snapshots and postcards show a woman who laughed hard and lived harder. Yet diaries reveal a rootless life marred by depression and drink. Suicide seems a reasonable conclusion, but Gunther suspects foul play. The house is for sale, after all, and Michelle was its only tenant - one who resisted all efforts to have her evicted. The unsavory landlord is a prime suspect but is safely equipped with an impressively air-tight alibi.

To uncover the truth about the fate of this discarded, all-but-forgotten woman, Gunther must follow a confusing trail of half leads and mounting crimes. He draws near to a violent and careless trio of criminals whose leader is hell-bent on making the career move of a lifetime - and willing to step on anyone who might get in his way.

Joe and Tom and everyone else

I have, as I am writing this, 20 unfinished titles in my library (including 2 boxed sets). But, when I want something soothing full of nice people and good police procedural I come looking for Joe and Vermont.

Intriguing Storu

I thought this was the most interesting of all the series so far. Great ways of tying it all together when it looked like it was heading so many different directions.

Best of the series so far for me!

This was the most intriguing of the Archer Mayor stories so far. I loved the development of the other characters, Willie, Sam, Spinney. Also, the Mel, Ellis, Nancy story was very engaging.

Joe Gunther Mystery by Archer Moyor a winner!

This is one of many Audible Plus Joe Gunther Mysteries in my vast library. I looked forward to this one and indeed, I was right. One thing: listen intently, as there are many characters and you don’t want to miss anything. Detective Gunther and his team vigorously investigate several homicides. “The Second Mouse” takes us through the investigative process in intricate detail. Tom Taylorson’s narrative skills go above and beyond. I search by narrator and he is one of my favorites. Though I found it free in Audible Plus, it is worth a treasured credit and highly recommended with 🍒 🍒 🍒 on top. Kudos to all involved in making this available.

Kept me interested till the end.

This was my first "Joe Gunther" story, and I was not disappointed. I enjoy murder mysterious by any medium; through books, movies, television, or however. I find it entertaining trying to figure out the "who done it", as we go through all the twists and turns and misleading information, ultimately culminating with the reveal of...the "guilty culprit"! Coming up with the "why" and "how" are added bonuses! The author did a good job making it difficult to determine these, although, a few times it was predictable.

There was a lot going on in this story, especially in the beginning, but, it worked itself out pretty quickly. Even though, there were several offshoot stories along the way, I never felt disconnected from the primary story line. Great job with that by the author! However, once or twice I felt a little let down by a story lines conclusion. But, it wasn't enough to give the book bad marks. With that being said, I found myself continually compelled to listen to this book to the end!

What really clinched it for me was the versatility of the narrator in depicting the various voices, including those of women. I could easily envision these characters based on his "voice" interpretation of the author's descriptions. I would love to listen to him narrating other books!

All in all, I really enjoyed listening to this book!
