Publisher's summary

Armed with Salem’s “Smart-Enuff” phone and Viv’s racing model Cadillac (with aggressive acceleration!), these two amateur super-sleuths set out to catch a gang of armed robbers terrorizing G-Ma’s neighborhood...if for no other reason than to stop G-Ma’s panic-stricken calls every time a car drives by. The only problem: They have no leads, no clues, and they accidentally got arrested for “moral crimes”. Will these bandits be the ones who got away? Or will they be caught in the crotchfire?

Salem's on the case!

Salem, everyone's favorite recovering alcoholic, and Viv, her wild, lead-footed octogenarian sidekick, are back for another adventure, This time around a gang of armed thieves are wreaking havoc in G-Ma's neighborhood and it's up to the umm...dysfunctional duo to set things right. Like the previous entries in the series, there are plenty of laughs to be had as Salem and Viv get into all sorts of crazy hijinks. But also like the previous books, it's not all just silly fun. There is a real depth to Salem, a woman who hasn't always made the right choices in her life and who is now struggling to be a better person. You just can't help but root for her. Once again Sandra Murphy does an excellent job with the narration. I especially love how she brings Viv to life, such a fun character. Well written

Another fun Christian Cozy Mystery read (not my usual genre). Witty banter and lovable characters fill every page. This was a hard read as far as topic, but was well written. Warning: there are triggers in this book if you have survived sexual assault. Had I known this, I wouldn't have read it.

Excellent all around

I've read the entire series and am listening through them again. The narrator is excellent and does the story justice. It is a joy.

A cozy with hard truths

I was a fan of Salem's from the first listen. Any chance to get into an audiobook with Salem, Viv and the rest of the characters is fine by me.

In this installment, there isn't a murder to solve, but there is a string of robberies on G-ma's side of town. She's so spooked and generally trigger happy that Salem fears there might be an accidental shooting. Then there's the plot with Salem's mom back in her life as she's about to get married. Again. Then there's Salem trying to fix things with Tony.

I really enjoy Salem as a character because she's really flawed, but she's sincere. She's in AA and she's a new Christian. She tries to take those lessons to heart. This could be called a Christian cozy because she's really trying to live the life, but that doesn't mean it's squeaky clean. Salem has some really hard conversations in this book with her mother and with Tony about things that happened in the past, particularly her sexual abuse. While this may be hard for some listeners to hear, it's done sensitively with the goal of Salem healing from past trauma.

Sandra Murphy's performance is good with skill in a variety of character voices. She uses her instrument to tell the story not try to get attention for itself.

Definitely recommended for cozy mystery fans. If any of the elements (Lubbock, Texas setting; addition and recovery; new Christians; friends with an age gap, main characters with pet dogs) appeal to you, pick up this book!

Funny but also sad story

Salem and Viv are out to find the criminal gang haunting the neighborhood. G-Ma is trying to hold down the fort at her hotel, but every sound makes her think she's being invaded. Salem is almost finished with her probation officer and she's trying to come out of debt.

There are some funny parts in this book. Much of it reminds me of Stephanie Plum. But there are dark parts, where Salem revisits the childhood horrors that she experienced.

This is the first book I've read by this author. It kept my interest, but I probably should have read the earlier books in the series first.

I listened to an audio version of this book. The narrator was excellent and she had great voices for each character.

I received a copy of the audio book from the author. This is my honest review.

Cozy like comfort food, but still keeps you guessing

Kim Hunt Harris and Sandra Murphy have done it again, creating an engaging mystery with characters as cozy as a warm blanket and a bowl of your grandmother’s chicken noodle soup on a chilly evening. If you have enjoyed the first two books of this series, you will continue to be invested in the saga of Salem, her dog, Stump, and her best friend, Viv, as they take on the case of the High Point Bandits.

Trigger warning: There are some serious issues involved here, as Salem also faces painful memories from her childhood and tries to cope with these truths as an adult.
