Publisher's summary

#1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER

“Here’s the best news you’ve heard all year: Not a single page disappoints....The only difficulty withTruly Madly Guilty? Putting it down." —Miami Herald

“Captivating, suspenseful…tantalizing.” —People Magazine

The new novel from Liane Moriarty, the #1
New York Times bestselling author of The Husband’s Secret, Big Little Lies, and What Alice Forgot, about how sometimes we don’t appreciate how extraordinary our ordinary lives are until it’s too late.

Six responsible adults. Three cute kids. One small dog. It’s just a normal weekend. What could possibly go wrong?

In Truly Madly Guilty, Liane Moriarty turns her unique, razor-sharp eye towards three seemingly happy families.

Sam and Clementine have a wonderful, albeit, busy life: they have two little girls, Sam has just started a new dream job, and Clementine, a cellist, is busy preparing for the audition of a lifetime. If there’s anything they can count on, it’s each other.

Clementine and Erika are each other’s oldest friends. A single look between them can convey an entire conversation. But theirs is a complicated relationship, so when Erika mentions a last minute invitation to a barbecue with her neighbors, Tiffany and Vid, Clementine and Sam don’t hesitate. Having Tiffany and Vid’s larger than life personalities there will be a welcome respite.

Two months later, it won’t stop raining, and Clementine and Sam can’t stop asking themselves the question:What if we hadn’t gone?

In Truly Madly Guilty, Liane Moriarty takes on the foundations of our lives: marriage, sex, parenthood, and friendship. She shows how guilt can expose the fault lines in the most seemingly strong relationships, how what we don’t say can be more powerful than what we do, and how sometimes it is the most innocent of moments that can do the greatest harm.

“Caroline Lee with Liane Moriarty makes one of the great pairings in audio publishing. Moriarty constructs a plot the way God builds an onion...Before you know it, Lee and Moriarty have you hopelessly hooked until you reach the dense, intricately interlocked heart of this wholly satisfying listen.”--AudioFile, Earphones Award Winner

“Moriarty’s fans will rejoice at her latest title as she tackles marriage, parenthood, friendship, and sex, in this provocative and gripping read...This novel sheds light on the truths that we all fear as parents, spouses, and friends. It’s perfect for those long summer days, but readers will have to pace themselves to not devour it in one sitting.” —Library Journal (starred review)

“Liane Moriarty is one of the few writers I’ll drop anything for. Her books are wise, honest, beautifully observed, and—unusually—I can never tell where they’re going to go.” —Jojo Moyes

seriously, stop analyzing and enjoy the ride

Would you listen to Truly Madly Guilty again? Why?

I can't believe that there are so many negative reviews. Yes it's long, but I haven't finished and can't wait to get into my car to commute and hear what happens next. It may not be as complex as some of her past works, but it makes you really think.Sometimes people are so critical because the can be. Remember... this is a read...it's not real or life or death. It's entertainment. I LOVE this book and don't want it to end!

Who was your favorite character and why?

Clementine. And the girls. I love the way Caroline Lee portrays kids in a feisty manner!

Didn't disappoint!!

I have been waiting without much patience for this book! I love Liane Moriarty and this book did not let me down! I had a long road trip to get through two days after it was released and had a hard time saving it. Of course, there's a twist that I was guessing about - the reveal was amazing and surprising! I love the characters and I wish Caroline Lee would be the outgoing message on my voicemail! <3

Can't Finish it. Maybe I will Come Back Later?

Any additional comments?

I was so excited for this book. Let me start by saying that I LOVE Liane Moriarty. I have read every one of her books. I was so excited and pre-ordered this book a month ago. But, I am a quarter of the way through and I am just not excited to go back to this book. I have found myself daydreaming and opting to listen to music instead of the book. I do not know where the author went wrong. I do not doubt that it is a good read, but for me it just wasn't engaging enough to keep me interested. The characters lacked the development that we have seen in other Moriarty books. And it is slow. Just. So. Slow!Big Little Lies is one of my all time favorite books and unfortunately for Moriarty, everyone, including myself, are always expecting something just as good.

So So

Any additional comments?

I'm a big fan of this narrator and I have really enjoyed Liane Moriarty's previous books - I adored "What Alice Forgot" and loved "The Husband's Secret." This was just okay. Liane does a great job of making the seemingly ordinary more extraordinary and interesting, but this just did not do it for me. I sort of was left wondering... "and..." waiting for something to happen. She missed the mark. In "Big Little Lies," the ending had this real punch at the end and I remember how everything was so interwoven... it was just this magical, in-depth, complex, and wonderful experience. She tried the same sort of thing here and it fell flat to me. If you buy it, it won't be a wasted credit - you'll be entertained, but I wouldn't expect greatness out of this one.

Not up to her usual standard

Is there anything you would change about this book?

Oh dear, a re-write? The story was drawn out and the characters lacked the usual depth I have come to expect of Liane. The story was linear adding nothing of value to it.

If you’ve listened to books by Liane Moriarty before, how does this one compare?

I've loved her others books having read every one of them - except this one. I don't love this one at all. I think other Moriarty fans will be disappointed too.

Which scene was your favorite?

No one particular scene stood out for me.

Do you think Truly Madly Guilty needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?

There's nowhere else to go with the story in my view.

Any additional comments?

If this book had been my first experience of this author, it's likely I would not have considered any others. Disappointing.

Engrossing!

I gobbled up this story like I have all other books from this terrific writer; I love her books - can’t wait for more!

Her stories always drag me in and keep me glued to the part page turner, part slice of life anecdotes, part stream of conscious happenings, hard to describe complex, twisted and engrossing plots.

It was an excellent read, as I expected, but I still removed one star because it started to feel a little long towards the end.

OBSESSED!!!

I am now officially obsessed with Liane Moriarty novels! I tell anyone I can to pick one up. I think I am also equally enamored with Caroline Lee as a narrator as she does an AMAZING job bringing the character, story and emotions to life.

The story is so brilliantly woven that you are able to move throughout the story without even knowing what "happened" at the BBQ but still grasp the effect that day left with all the characters involved.

A wonderfully insightful look into marriage, friendship, parenting and the little mistakes we make that impact those around us.

Loved it

I'm confused by all the negative reviews. I found it to be another beautiful, detailed, thought provoking work by Liane Moriarty. I'll listen to it again soon.

I could not put my headphones down!

What did you love best about Truly Madly Guilty?

I kept wanting to hear what was going to happen next.

What did you like best about this story?

I love the different voices of the narrator. The plot line kept me at the edge of my seat. I literally couldn't finish my housework because I wanted to know what happened next. I don't recall the last time, if ever, this has ever happened to me.

Which scene was your favorite?

The scene where Erica finally recalls what happened at the party.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Oh yes! I generally listen no more than 1 to 2 hours at a time. But I would have stayed inside all day if I didn't have other things to do.

Any additional comments?

The actual plot may not have been as riveting as "Big Little Lies," but the way the story flowed from one chapter to the next kept me glued to the book way past my normal bedtime. The author does an incredible job of getting into each character's psyche so that you realize how complicated they all are.
