About this listen

A writer’s search for her missing friend becomes a real-life thriller in a twisting novel of suspense by the New York Times bestselling author of These Toxic Things.

Bailey Meadows has just moved into the remote Topanga Canyon home of thriller author Jack Beckham. As his writer-in-residence, she’s supposed to help him once again reach the bestseller list. But she’s not there to write a thriller—she’s there to find Sam Morris, a community leader dedicated to finding missing people, who has disappeared in the canyon surrounding Beckham’s property.

The missing woman was last seen in the drought-stricken forest known for wildfires and mountain lions. Each new day, Bailey learns just how dangerous these canyons are—for the other women who have also gone missing here…and for her. Could these missing women be linked to strange events that occurred decades ago at the Beckham estate?

As fire season in the canyons approaches, Bailey must race to unravel the truth from fiction before she becomes the next woman lost in the forest.

Critic reviews

“Narrator Dara Brown's performance—full of foreboding—will have listeners questioning everything in this twisty thriller.… Brown channels Bailey's anxiety as she navigates the harsh landscape and tight-lipped canyon community.… Brown has a knack for creating deep, gravelly voices for the male characters; her portrayal of Jack, in particular, is imbued with the charm and good humor the beloved writer is known for. Nothing is what it seems, and Brown is careful to select voices and tones that don't give away the unexpected reveals. A thoughtfully crafted performance.” AudioFile Magazine

“Nothing is what it seems in this tour de force.” Kirkus Reviews (starred review)

“Classic gothic and Hitchcockian themes take on post-COVID-19 twists here, fueling paranoia and shifting realities as Hall crafts harrowing what-ifs around writers’ relationships with their stories.” Booklist

People are not who you think they are

Thank you Netgalley for the advance reader copy of What Fire Brings by Rachel Howzell Hall in exchange for an honest review. This book was so good and twisty like some of the roads in California. I really liked Bailey and getting to know her throughout the book, and the surprises that kept popping up.

Extremely well-written and engaging

Extremely well-written and engaging. The characters were well thought out and developed, with their own unique personalities and motivations. The Rachel Howzell Hall did a great job of creating a world that felt vivid and real, drawing me in from the very first page.

However, I have to admit that I did predict some of the plot twists and outcomes ahead of time. While this didn't necessarily detract from my enjoyment of the story, as I was still invested in the characters and their journey, it did make some parts of the story feel slightly predictable.

Overall, I would highly recommend this story to anyone looking for a well-written, character-driven narrative. Despite some predictability in certain plot lines, the strong writing and compelling characters more than make up for it. I look forward to Hall’s next book!
