Le 31 août 1934, quatre jeunes savants - avec à leur tête le jeune Paul-Émile Victor - s'installent pour l'hiver à Tassiussak, minuscule bourgade qui sert de "capitale" aux Ammassalimiout, le peuple qu'ils ont décidé de rencontrer au Groenland. Grâce à sa liaison avec Doumidia, une jeune Esquimaude, Paul-Émile Victor apprend très vite la langue inuit et se fait raconter les histoires autochtones. Nourri de cette culture et marqué par le traumatisme constitutif de l'histoire des esquimaux que sont les grandes famines de 1882-1883, il collecte les récits qui composent "La Grande Faim" en hommage au peuple qu'il fut le premier et le seul à si bien connaître.

De 1934 à 1935, Paul-Emile Victor séjourna au Groenland avec une petite équipe de scientifiques. En 1936, il traversa la calotte glacière du Groenland. Il hiverna ensuite seul avec une famille esquimau de la côte Est. De 1936 à 1946, il parcourt les Alpes, la Laponie, la Suède, la Finlande, l'Alaska, les iles Aléoutiennes, selon les nécessités de l'époque. Démobilisé en juillet 1946, il rentre en France et organise les Expéditions Polaires Françaises. En 1953, ces Expéditions comptaient à leur actif cinq campagnes d'été et 2 hivernages au Groenland, et 5 campagnes d'été et 3 hivernages en Terre Adélie.
