Alice Gerstenberg (1885-1972) was an American playwright, actress, and activist. She is best known for her many feminist plays, which often feature female lead characters and all-female casts (a rare occurrence at the time). José de Ribera nació en Játiva (Valencia) y fue bautizado en aquella localidad el 17 de febrero de 1591. Hijo del sastre Simón Ribera y de su esposa Margarita Cucó, sus padres le enviaron a Valencia para que siguiera la carrera de Letras en aquella Universidad, pero su afición a las Bellas Artes le hizo cambiar los libros por los pinceles y asistir al taller de su paisano Francisco Ribalta (1565-1628). Ribalta abrió al joven Ribera el camino para llegar a convertirse en uno de nuestros mejores pintores.

Desde los últimos años del siglo XV, la España de los Reyes Católicos conoce el resurgir de la vitalidad nacional. La victoria política deja también su impronta en lo cultural. Se ha dicho muchas veces, y con razón, que hay más diferencia entre el arte románico y el gótico que entre el gótico y el renacentista. Hacia el último tercio del siglo XVI vino a España un pintor excepcional: Domenico Theotocopulos, El Greco. Es un retraso espacial, puesto que Cataluña se halla en contacto directo con los focos franceses, y mantiene con Italia un ininterrumpido comercio marítimo.

El cambio que sufren las artes industriales o decorativas durante el siglo XIX es de gran importancia, por cuanto no se trata ya de conseguir obras de calidad artística como hasta entonces, sino de producir obras que encuentren fácil comercio por su bajo precio. Ya no van a servir únicamente para los artistas y artesanos puedan plasmar en ellas su ingenio y valía, sino que se industrializa su producción para satisfacer las necesidades de la pujante burguesía que ahora se desarrolla.

Nació en Fuente de Cantos, provincia de Badajoz, allá por el año 1598, a muy corto espacio de tiempo de otros "intocables", como Ribera o Velázquez, que nacen también al filo del 1600. Esta fecha es una de las más notables forjadoras de artistas, no sólo en España, sino también en el extranjero. Nombres como Rembrandt, Vermeer, Poussin, etc, aparecen en el mundo por las mismas fechas, es decir, son hombres de la misma generación. La generación de 1600 es una de las primeras generaciones de la Europa moderna, que es casi como decir de la Europa barroca.

El siglo XVIII coincide con la gran explosión cultural europea que se conoce habitualmente como Ilustración, y cuyo corazón reside indudablemente en Francia. La Ilustración es un fenómeno cultural de corte político y literario, pero también se proyecta con cierta originalidad en las artes plásticas, sobre todo en las de su potencia fundamental -Francia- y en algunos otros pueblos que aprovechan la ocasión para luchar por su libertad política y cultural en general.
