"The Call of the Wild" is a short adventure novel by Jack London published in 1903 and set in Yukon, Canada during the 1890s Klondike Gold Rush when strong sled dogs were in high demand.

The central character of the novel is a dog named Buck. The story opens at a ranch in Santa Clara Valley, California, when Buck is stolen from his home and sold into service as a sled dog in Alaska. He becomes progressively feral in the harsh environment, where he is forced to fight to survive.

The themes of man's inhumanity to man, as well as man pitted against the violence of nature, are vividly exposed in this sampling of Jack London's short stories. The titles included in this collection are "Love of Life", "Batard", "The House of Mapuhi", and "Mauki".

Born in the wild, the wolf-dog White Fang quickly learns the law of nature: eat or be eaten. Captured by Indians, bullied by another dog, and then turned into a killer, he becomes vicious and fiercely independent. Rarely has the raw realism of life on the edge of civilization been so vividly captured.

From Jack London comes another tale of the wild. In this story the wild half-wolf White Fang survives a harsh living in America's frozen northland. First in the wild, then as a dog of the Indian peoples, then as a fighting dog, before at last finding a good home in the south.

What Mr. London did so graphically for the poorest quarters of London a few years ago, he now does for the American underworld of the tramp and hobo, a territory in which his young wanderlust led him far afield.

He was a pioneer in the then-burgeoning world of commercial magazine fiction and was one of the first fiction writers to obtain worldwide celebrity and a large fortune from his fiction alone. Edith Whittlesey is born in a country district of England, where life flows as per the rule of thumb. She is married to an honest and hardworking miner, who works together with four other men.
