Mary Postgate is a horrifying story, and like much of Kipling's work it can be interpreted in different ways. It was written as propaganda in 1915 during World War I against the background of German atrocities and massacres in France, and just after German aircraft had engaged in bombing raids on English towns. Mary Postgate was intended to inspire English readers with just such cold-blooded courage and ruthlessness as Mary herself displays.

Joseph Rudyard Kipling (1865-1936) was an English journalist, short-story writer, poet, and novelist. 'Wireless' is a multilayered story set in a chemist's shop, where the nephew of the business' owner occupies a back room where he is experimenting with Marconi's new radio technology. The chemist's assistant, lovesick and also sick with tuberculosis, is staying in the shop overnight. The narrator is visiting, officially to observe the radio experiments...but he discovers that another set of signals are being received in the chemist's shop.

Four short stories are included in this volume of Kipling works. They are: "Mowgli's Brothers" - Mowgli, a small boy, is found orphaned in the jungle by wolves and raised by them; "Kaa's Hunting" - Mowgli is kidnapped by the Bandar-log (monkeys) and rescued by Kaa, a python; "The White Seal" - The community of seals believe a great white seal will come, and deliver them from the wrath of the seal hunters; and "Rikki Tikki Tavi" - A young mongoose defends his human family against a pair of marauding cobras.

The Just So Stories began as bedtime stories told to "Effie" (Josephine, Kipling's firstborn). When the first three were published in a children's magazine, a year before her death, Kipling explained: "....in the evening, there were stories meant to put Effie to sleep, and you were not allowed to alter those by one single little word. They had to be told just so; or Effie would wake up and put back the missing sentence." (Wikipedia)
