Prior to that role, he was in a number of off-Broadway productions.

Jimmy Carter's the author of a number of books including a memoir about his boyhood, An Hour Before Daylight. His latest is a memoir, Christmas in Plains. Carter and his family has spent the last 48 Christmases in Plains, through out his Navy career, his stint as Governor and his tenure as President.

Veteran CBS 60 Minutes and 60 Minutes II producer George Crile and retired congressman Charlie Wilson on this edition of Fresh Air. George Crile is the author of the new book, Charlie Wilson's War: The Extraordinary Story of the Largest Covert Operation in History. It's about the CIA's secret war in Afghanistan, and their support of the Afghan mujahideen against the Soviet Union.

Remembering the Bay of Pigs invasion on this edition of Fresh Air. April 17th marks the 40th anniversary of the Bay of Pigs invasion, in which Cuban exiles trained by the CIA unsuccessfully tried to invade Cuba and overthrow Castro. Peter Kornbluh of the National Security Archives edited the new book Bay of Pigs Declassified. Among the documents released is the agency's post-mortem on the disastrous invasion, written after a six-month investigation.

Hear actor Steve Carell and music critic Milo Miles on this edition of Fresh Air. Steve Carell is starring in the new comedy film Dan in Real Life. Carell is best known for his role as Michael Scott in NBC's The Office. His other film roles include The 40 Year Old Virgin and Little Miss Sunshine. He rose to fame as a correspondent on The Daily Show with Jon Stewart, where he was part of the team from 1999 to 2004.

Hear journalist Linda Greenhouse and rock historian Ed Ward on this edition of Fresh Air. Greenhouse, a Pulitzer Prize-winning reporter for the New York Times, will tell us about the current Supreme Court, including issues facing the court and cases coming up in the future. She's been covering the court since 1978. Then, rock historian Ed Ward profiles songwriter Doc Pomus (1925-1991). Born Jerome Solon Felder, he wrote hits for Ray Charles and Elvis Presley.

Hear artist Chuck Close, actor Richard Gere, rock historian Ed Ward, and film critic David Edelstein on this edition of Fresh Air. Chuck Close has been called "the most methodical artist that has ever lived in America" and the "reigning portraitist of the Information Age". He creates jumbo-size faces on canvas (8 or 9 feet high), copying them from photographs. They are painted in a dotted faux-pointillist style.

Journalist Orville Schell and Veton Surroi, publisher of the leading independent Albanian newspaper in Kosovo on this edition of Fresh Air. For centuries now, the mountainous and remote nation of Tibet has been the object of Western fascination. Today, Tibet is the subject of movies and Hollywood celebrities have taken on Tibetan Freedom as their cause. Schell talks about his new book Virtual Tibet, and about Tibet, real and imagined, and takes us through the history of the West's infatuation. He has covered China and Tibet for many years, and is the author of a number of books. Plus, Surroi, publisher of Koha Dotire has just received a democracy award from the National Endowment for Democracy, a U.S. non-profit bipartisan organization. During NATO's bombing of Kosovo, Surroi was in hiding and his newspaper was published underground.

Kirk Varnedoe on this archive edition of Fresh Air. Ed Harris is starring as Jackson Pollack in a new movie about the artist's life. We'll feature an interview from our archives about Pollock. Varnedoe was the chief curator for a major Jackson Pollock exhibit that ran last year at the Museum of Modern Art in New York City. Pollock is widely considered the most challenging and influential American painter of the twentieth century and one of the primary creators in modern art since 1945.

Hear actor and producer Paul Rudd and music critic Milo Miles on this edition of Fresh Air. Paul Rudd produced and stars in the new independent film The Ten, which is a series of irreverent vignettes that reinterpret the Ten Commandments for a modern audience. Rudd is also in the film Knocked Up, and he stars in the upcoming movie I Could Never Be Your Woman with Michelle Pfeiffer.

Retired General Wesley K. Clark on this edition of Fresh Air. He commanded the NATO troops during the Kosovo conflict, the first and only NATO war. His new memoir is Waging Modern War. (Broadcast Date: May 23, 2001)

Journalist Robert Kaplan and Peter W. Galbraith, former U.S. amassador to Croatia, on this edition of Fresh Air. Robert Kaplan is a correspondent for The Atlantic Monthly. His story in the April edition of magazine is "A Tale of Two Colonies." Kaplan traveled to Yemen and Eritrea to investigate how the war on terrorism is forcing the U.S. to be involved with each. Yemen is believed to have the largest Al-Qaeda presence outside of the Afghanistan-Pakistan region.

Actress Lisa Kudrow on this edition of Fresh Air. She stars in the new film Wonderland. Set in 1980s Hollywood, it's about a mysterious mass murder that took place on Wonderland Avenue. Porn Star John Holmes was involved somehow, but the crime was never solved.

Journalists Lou Michel and Dan Herbeck and veteran broadcaster and executive producer of 60 Minutes, Don Hewitt, on this edition of Fresh Air. Michel and Herbeck are staff writers for The Buffalo News. The two have collaborated on the new book American Terrorist: Timothy McVeigh & the Oklahoma City Bombing. Michel lived 20 minutes away from McVeigh's father, and over time, he developed a relationship with the elder McVeigh, which in turn helped him gain access to his son.

Novelist Alice Sebold and comedian and late night talk show host Jay Leno on this edition of Fresh Air. Alice Sebold's the author of the book, The Lovely Bones which will be coming out in paperback. Fresh Air book critic Maureen Corrigan listed The Lovely Bones as one of the ten best books of 2002. Sebold is also the author of the memoir, Lucky.

Near Easter Studies professor Bernard Lewis and Robert Jay Lifton on this edition of Fresh Air. Bernard Lewis, Ph.D is a Professor Emeritus of Near Eastern Studies at Princeton University.
