Jane Austen is one of the most widely read British authors. Her realism and biting irony make for a very lively read, and the quality of her plots have earned her a high-ranking place into the hearts of scholars. Her greatest stories sparkled a wave of adaptations in the last decades, because of their touching modernity and the realism of their reflections on the attitude of women about marriage and social standing. "Pride and Prejudice" has been called the second most beloved book of all British production; "Sense and Sensibility", "Mansfield Park", and "Emma" are also seminal works which have inspired countless readers.

Northanger Abbey was the first of Jane Austen's novels to be completed for publication, in 1803. However, it was not published until after her death in 1817, along with another novel of hers, Persuasion. Northanger Abbey is a satire of Gothic novels, which were quite popular at the time, in 1798-99. This coming-of-age story revolves around Catherine Morland, a young and naïve "heroine", who entertains the reader on her journey to a better understanding of the world and those around her.

When Charles Bingley, a rich, single man, moves to the Netherfield estate, the neighborhood residents are thrilled, especially Mrs. Bennet who intends to marry him to one of her girls. But who can anticipate the effect of his friend, Mr. Darcy, on Elizabeth Bennet, and how his pride and her prejudice are eventually overcome for the good of all.
