It has been stated that a person should study the book of Proverbs if he or she wants to be wise. Accordingly, the book of Proverbs has been organized into thirty-one different chapters. That means that a person can read a chapter in the book each day based upon the numerical date of the month. For example, on the first day of the month, one would read the first chapter in the book of Proverbs. On the second day of the month, he or she would read the second chapter. If a person were to do that for an entire year, then he or she would read the whole book of Proverbs twelve times every year ...

Two of the books of the scriptures that should be studied daily are the book of Proverbs and the book of Psalms. One cannot study the opening chapters of the book of Genesis without getting into some very weighty issues. There is, of course, the first chapter that talks about Creation. This book discusses one of the most important set of verses in one of the most important chapters in one of the most important books of the Bible. The whole doctrine about being born again is based upon a conversation that Jesus had had with a Pharisee named Nicodemus. This text is a commentary on the gospel of John. Because John focused on showing the deity of Christ, one gets his unique slant on how the story of Jesus is told. When this book was begun in late November 2013, the intent was to write a commentary on chapter five of Paul's letter to the church at Ephesus. But about fifty pages into that endeavor, it became clear that the book was not going in that direction. For one thing, his letter to that church had not even been mentioned in those pages. This book is my 50th anniversary gift to Linda. We could not renew our vows this year and have the celebration that we would have liked because of the pandemic that has swept the world. So this book is something that I hope will remind her of all the good years that we have had together. The years have flown by. But we have been abundantly blessed from the very beginning. In the following pages of this text, many ideas will be presented that can help a person better know what the Lord wants him or her to do. Most of those ideas for effectively serving Him will be based upon verses like Jeremiah 29:12-13, John 3:16, II Peter 3:9, Luke 19:10, and Romans 5:6-8. In summary, what was Jesus saying to those people in this first part of His sermon? First, He was telling them to be poor in spirit, which meant that they should have a heart and a mind that would be open to His instructions. Second, He had made some specific promises to those who are poor in spirit, mourning over their spiritual condition, meek, hungering and thirsting after righteousness, merciful, pure in heart, and makers of peace.
