The protagonist is an everyman character, and the plot centers on his journey from his hometown, the "City of Destruction" ("this world"), to the "Celestial City" ("that which is to come": Heaven).

One of the most popular stories ever written, this allegory tells of Christian, an everyman character, who makes his way from the "City of Destruction" to the "Celestial City" of Zion. Christian finds himself weighed down by a great burden he carries from reading a book (obviously the Bible). This burden, which could cause him to sink into hell (Tophet), is Christian's acute, immediate concern, and impels him to a crisis: what to do for deliverance.

Si tratta di un'allegoria cristiana in cui il protagonista, Cristiano, affronta un percorso di redenzione dai propri peccati affrontando via via tentazioni e nemici aperti: troveremo così ad esempio la Palude dello Scoraggiamento, o il Gigante Disperazione. Dopo sei anni dalla pubblicazione del primo libro, l'autore scrisse poi un secondo libro (che venne poi pubblicato, da quel momento sempre insieme al primo, creando così una prima e una seconda parte).
