En la ficción de la novela un grupo de animales de una granja expulsa a los humanos tiranos y crean un sistema de gobierno propio que acaba convirtiéndose en otra tiranía brutal. Orwell, un socialista democrático y durante muchos años un miembro del Partido Laborista Independiente, se posicionó con obras como Rebelión en la granja y 1984 contra el totalitarismo tanto nazi como soviético.

O trabalho pesado, os maus tratos, a falta de liberdade, o desrespeito aos direitos básicos... George Orwell was an English novelist, essayist, journalist, and critic, best known for the allegorical novella Animal Farm (1945) and the dystopian novel 1984 (1949). Animal Farm is Orwell's classic satire of the Russian Revolution. The farm animals rise up against Farmer Jones and transform the Manor Farm into Animal Farm, an egalitarian society built on the credo that All Animals Are Created Equal. In 1984, the protagonist, Winston Smith ,wrestles with oppression in Oceania, a state where the Party scrutinizes every human action with Big Brother.

Books v Cigarettes is a funny and irreverent essay comparing the costs of reading to other forms of recreation including smoking. Originating from the experience of an editor friend who was firewatching during the Second World War, who was told by factory workers that they had no interest in literature because they could not afford books, the essay first appeared in Tribune in 1946.

Na historia, os animais da granxa derrocan os seus opresores humanos para establecer unha sociedade de igualdade e xustiza. Porén, os seus obxectivos son corrompidos polos cochos, que asumen roles de liderado e vólvense tiránicos, o que ilustra os perigos do poder absoluto e a traizón das ideas revolucionarias.

Alligevel har Winston forbudte tanker, og han kommer i kontakt med andre oprørere, bl.a. pigen Julia, som han forelsker sig i, hvilket i øvrigt også er forbudt.
