Enter into a complex international scenario of espionage, intrigue, and assassination. Thrown in are a mixed bag of characters. The young visitor to the household of Sir Adrian Fettice, himself something of an enigma, his opposite number of the German Secret Service, some almost innocent bystanders, a deadly assassin, and Sherlock Holmes. A trap is set, but the outcome is not as expected. Only the quickness of mind of the greatest detective is capable of achieving the most unexpected but brilliant final result.

It is 1909, and 20 years have passed since the great Devon adventure. Holmes is consulted by Sir Henry Baskerville’s son after a shepherd in the baronet’s clothes is found dead at the foot of a cliff. Straight after this encounter, Elgar starts on the work that is to become his masterpiece. And to maximize public interest in it, the composer and Holmes indicate that there are mysteries about its content, inspiration, and origin. On one matter, Holmes withholds an insight of his from Elgar and -- deliberately or not -- the title Enigma Variations is the result.

All the characters return for the final part of Idi's story. Grown into a powerful magician, Idi must prepare for the war that is coming. Katrina has grown into a beautiful young lady, despite her manly attire, and her affections for Absalom are worn on her sleeve. She must, however, vie for his attention against the stunning Loreiei who is set on marrying the future king of Talia. The ogre Crannog-Fergal adopts the Fart Platoon goblins and sets about building a gateway to other worlds.

The British Government commissions Holmes and Watson to travel to Germany in the company of leading German interpreter Paul-Otto Schmidt, to help the authorities find the man who shot Horst Wessel, the leader of the Storm Troopers. Holmes soon identifies Wessel's attacker and takes part in a politically charged interrogation of him attended by the Gauleiter of Berlin, Joseph Gӧbbels.

He wants their help in writing his account of the life of a religious leader in an Eastern Mediterranean country whose death has caused unparalleled speculation.
