About this listen
Training people in sport as coaches or in fitness as personal trainers is certainly rewarding work. But there's a problem: What do we do next? There are countless books on diet and exercise and hundreds of machines, devices, and gimmicks to train people, and new gadgets and gizmos are popping up with every passing day.
Can You Go? answers this question: What do we need to do next?
Appropriate assessment leads to an appropriate answer. When we find a mobility issue, let's focus on mobility work. The same is true for both body composition and strength - we focus on what we need to do, not what we want to do.
For the performance athlete, sometimes assessment can be the short, brutal, and harsh question, "Can you go?" Lessons from this frankness can be learned by both the coach and the trainer. The deconditioned and the elite share the same basic human body. Our job is to enhance performance and quality of life with every training situation.

You've brought your clients up to the minimum standards. You've done your assessments. Now what? That's the question Dan answers in this book, the third installment of this series.

Most diet and workout books are focused on the wrong things: They focus on WHAT instead of HOW. The leanest people focus on how, on their eating habits, not on fad diets. Diets that rely on willpower and discipline fail. The path to results is made up of eleven small, simple, step-by-step habits. Rotating through phases of metabolic, endurance, and strength workouts yields the best fat-loss results.

Imagine this (go ahead, it's an easy one): You're bored with your workouts. Nothing's changing; you're not getting stronger or leaner or feeling better, and, heck, maybe you'll just take a layoff and see what happens. You know what happens. That two-week layoff lasts a year, that's what happens! Now consider this: Traffic was light and you're 15 minutes early for your dental cleaning appointment. You flip open your device and bring up your new copy of Before We Go. By the time the dental tech calls you, you've heard two chapters and are amped to get to the gym. Your mind is racing through the appointment, and it's all you can do to stay in that squeaky lounge chair.

In this collection of short talks, I tried to link together what I thought was crucial and important in the fitness field - and in sports in general - that sometimes don't work very well in something like a book or an article. These are all too long for an article, and too short for a book. But they're all very important principles, and these are all concepts I think need to be linked together.

The risk factors in exercise and athletics are going up. Why? Because people don't have enough information to know how to dose and scale the activities they do. The biggest problem in fitness today is not availability or access to fitness professionals, nor is it availability of information. It's a little simpler than that, and in this collection of recorded live lectures, Gray Cook explains what he's learned about movement and movement learning in his years as a physical therapist and strength coach.

A diamond mine...
As I age and become wiser I realize the depth of Dan John's work. As I listened to this, I found myself smiling and shaking my head while thinking "This is brilliant." There are so many gems throughout this book. And each gem isn't just great advice; it's years or decades of wisdom condensed down into a sentence clarity. Condensing makes it simple, but I think it also makes it easy to miss... Listen closely! As you learn in this field and in life, you'll look back and see a wealth of knowledge contained in Can You Go... If you're wiser than I, you'll see that sooner, rather than later.
FANTASTIC LISTEN!! (And read, of course. I bought the book as well.)

Awesome....as usual.
If you could sum up Can You Go? in three words, what would they be?
Minimalist, Simplicity, and Awesome.
Any additional comments?
Having gone to a Dan John seminar a few times, his work really resonates with my principles of physical fitness. Like all his other pieces, this is well written, easy to follow, and read by Dan himself. I would definitely encourage others to read this book.

Always enlightening
Dan hits the nail on the head...again. I enjoy the relatable way he discusses his topics. The only downfall of this recording is the quality. There is a lot of echo which can make it hard to hear and tough to listen to at first. Eventually I was able to block it out but it was distracting ever so often.

The real deal
If you could sum up Can You Go? in three words, what would they be?
Dan John is the real deal. "Eat like an adult" is so simple but unfortunately we need to hear it. He talks about honest assessments and corrective exercises. He eschews the single joint, mirror muscle exercises in favor of compound work that builds strength, fitness and has applications in the real world. This audiobook is on my IPod permanently. I can skip to any section and be inspired. All of his work is great.

Amazing Book
Coach Dan John is a leader in the fitness industry. He takes all the science of training and boils it down to make it easy. Dan is always a joy to listen to and learn from. His humor makes me remember things he teaches much easier. The more I read Dan's work, the more my coaching changes for the better. Even if there is a couple things I might not be 100% with on his teachings. He at least makes me think and question my coaching. You have to always stay above the learning curve to be a great coach. I believe Dan does just that. He even will admit any failures in the past to help you know that you never know everything. We have to be adaptable coaches. If you want to continue mastering your craft, this book will help you on that path.
