Story
On June 25, 1973, a seven-year-old girl went missing from the Montana campground where her family was vacationing. Somebody had slit open the back of their tent and snatched her from under their noses. None of them saw or heard anything. Susie Jaeger had vanished into thin air, plucked by a shadow. As days stretched into weeks, and weeks into months, Special Agent Pete Dunbar attended a workshop at FBI Headquarters in Quantico, Virgina, led by two agents who had hatched a radical new idea: What if criminals left a psychological trail that would lead us to them?

In this fascinating memoir, Taylor draws on some of the most tragic, horrific and illuminating of these cases - as well as dark secrets from his own family's past - to explore some of the questions he grapples with every day: why do people kill? Does committing a monstrous act make someone a monster? Could any of us, in the wrong circumstances, become a killer?

Paul returns to an old file cabinet at the back of the forensic lab to look for another cold case he can work—something with DNA. He finds one.

For most families that have suffered the unsolved murder of a loved one, a successful cold case investigation can finally bring closure to their tragedy and, ideally, bring the perpetrator to justice. But in 2013, when LaPorte, Indiana, police detectives arrested Jason Tibbs for the murder of sixteen-year-old Rayna Rison twenty years before, they sent an innocent man to prison, and they also removed a cloud over the victim's brother-in-law, Ray McCarty, who had previously been indicted for killing her.

Instead of paying a ransom and getting their daughter returned, JonBenét’s lifeless body was discovered early that afternoon in a little-used room of the family's cellar by her father and a family friend. JonBenet was discovered with tape across her mouth, a ligature buried deep in the skin of her neck through use of a garrote fashioned from cord and a broken ...

Long teaser with no resolution
The book is an interesting overview of evidence related to the unsolved crime of the murder of JonBenet Ramsey. However, the narrator is poor with many errors in pronunciation and obvious re-records that make it difficult to listen to, she is also female where the actual author is male.
The book itself seems to be a bit of a diatribe on internal strife within the police department and DAs office in Boulder surrounding this crime. The author consistently teases - “more on this evidence later” or “more on that theory later” and then when the time comes to actually lay out his theory of the crime, he holds back and refuses to share it in the book, instead inviting readers to use their imagination to connect the dots themselves.
Overall, fairly frustrating listen and I won’t revisit it, but it did contain first-person content written by a person close to the case, so it may be interesting to those who are curious about the investigation itself.
