Publisher's summary

In an age where technology rules with an iron fist and attention spans are becoming shorter and shorter, it is becoming increasingly challenging for parents to not only keep their child’s attention but also to get them to listen. And it all starts with how we talk to them.

Believe it or not, how you speak to your child determines whether they will listen to you or not. You are at war with outside influences on your child’s behaviors and reactions. For this reason, wise and tactical approaches are recommended to not just win your child over but to have their utter and complete respect.

With a no-nonsense, straightforward approach, How to Talk to Kids is the ultimate guide for both new and seasoned parents. Rachel Burgess, a mother of three, offers sound advice and strategies on getting your child to listen.

Some of the areas explored in this book are:

  • The reason your child is not listening to you
  • Practicing active listening
  • Understanding the difference between discipline and punishment
  • Mistakes made when listening to your kids
  • Managing your anger
  • Understanding your child’s psychology
  • Effective consequences
  • Teaching good manners
  • Making conversation with your kids a priority

Whether you are at your wit's end with a child who talks back and does the opposite of what they are told or you merely want to sharpen your parenting skills to create a bond and mutual respect with your child, How to Talk to Kids is the guide for you. Rachel advises from an empirical perspective with a style that is emphatic, instructional, and exhortative.

By the end of his book, parents will not only be more knowledgeable and understanding about the “why” of their child’s behaviors, but will also take a step back to examine themselves and their own approach toward communication with their child.

Parenting 101

I love the fact the writer starts with acknowledging to get your child's attention before you talk to them. So many people miss this step and get frustrated with their kids when it's something that can easily be avoided. I personally don't have kids yet but this book is definitely a good read on what not to do and what to do instead.

What really resonated with me was the chapter on how your child views the world and how they are still learning how to communicate in the best way. If we keep in mind that our children don't know how to properly communicate yet during childhood and we as parents play a significant role in teaching them, we will move two steps forward in raising them to become amazing adults!

The reader can find actionable tips and tricks in this book to become an amazing parent to their kid!

Great book for talking to toddlers

This book really helped me out to understand how to communicate with my 3 yr old son. As a father, it can sometimes be really difficult to express your feelings to your kid. The tips and advice showed me another perspective on what my son is going through.

A great way to improve parenting skills

I recently listened to another audiobook from the same author and I wanted to give this one a try. Rachel outlines well the issues of parenting and addresses practical solutions, which is a big reason why I gave her another try. It's amazing how interacting with kids is almost like acting, and some parents act irresponsible and do not communicate well or disregard active listing. Listen more, talk less = huge key to become an efficient parent. A great manual I will keep revisiting, very well narrated, with great cadence and a soothing voice.
