About this listen

The fantastic prequel to The Good Daughter, the stunning new stand-alone from the number-one best-selling author of the Will Trent and Grant County series.

Protecting someone always comes at a cost.

At the age of 13, Charlie Quinn's childhood came to an abrupt and devastating end. Two men, with a grudge against her lawyer father, broke into Charlie's home - and after that shocking night, her world was never the same.

Now a lawyer herself, Charlie has made it her mission to defend those with no one else to turn to. So when Flora Faulkner, a motherless teen, begs for help, Charlie is reminded of her own past and is powerless to say no.

But honor student Flora is in far deeper trouble than Charlie could ever have anticipated. Soon she must ask herself: How far should she go to protect her client? And can she truly believe everything she is being told?

Great prequel to The Good Daughter!

Last Breath by Karen Slaughter was an entertaining 4 hours that flew by. I always seem to enjoy Slaughter books and this one was just as enjoyable as the others I've read. You're introduced to Charlie Quinn, a defense lawyer who always seems to end up working for free because she's got a heart of gold and takes on cases that don't always pay. One of these cases is to help Flora, a teenager, become emancipated from her Aunt and Uncle, who are drawing on her trust and may not have her best interest at heart.

Well, I'll say that this prequel, although not the normal length of a Slaughter book, kept me listening and was a really fun story. I don't want to give anything away, but I loved how it all come together in the end. Everything is not always what it seems, and Slaughter has crafted a really well written and fast-paced story that will leave you trying to figure things out all the way until the end. I'd definitely recommend this book and Kathleen Early did a great job narrating it as well.

Last Breath

The story was too short. I would have liked it better with more. The narration was good.

leaves you hanging

I liked the book, till it ended in the middle of the story. Disappointed in that.

Move Over Faith Mitchell

This is FREE for gold members!!! If you are a fan of Will Trent and the wonderful Faith and Amanda, this pre quell is for you.
Before Ms Slaughter got an extended book deal for more Will Trent, she wrote this and the Good Daughter. Since Ms Slaughter exposes many of the cruel and evil atrocities done to women in her books, you are alway Awaiting for THAT shoe to drop so to speak. I love Ms Early narrations of Ms Slaughter’s work!! But I always have to gear up mentally for a Slaughter journey. Meaning I just can not jump straight Into the next book. Then when I get into a new story, I find that YES Ms. Slaughter once again injects wit and sarcastic humor via her colorful characters that helps balance the evil of the mystery. I just finished the Silent Wife, and recognized the wonderful antics and characteristics in this book’s new characters. How clever to give us more of those antics in a new series. I think some of her fans just did not realize this, but reviewer fan Wayne did! Audible and author put this book on the free list maybe thinking that some of the fans may recognize the the thread. I already own The Good Daughter so I am all set to start it. Don’t Miss Out! I do use the 1.2 speed as it matches the author’s intentions. Give it a try.

Weird ending

The story ended almost like a cliff hanger - In the middle of nowhere! Just as it was getting somewhat interesting, it was over. Very disappointing!

The ending?

I've read a lot of books in my time, there is either a follow-up book to come or I just didn't "get" the ending?? So disappointing.

wasn't expecting the abrupt ending

I love the character development of Charlie aka Chuck.
I read this after reading the good daughter, and though it didn't ruin anything, I wish I had read this first.
overall great book, but wish it was longer, ending felt abrupt
