About this listen

From author and illustrator Sophie Lucido Johnson comes Love Without Sex, a fascinating three-part Audible Original that explores nontraditional relationships and shows how breaking down stereotypes and misconceptions around love can help us all build stronger, healthier connections to one another.

In our culture, the rom-com boy-meets-girl romantic set up is by and large the most persistent love story. And there’s nothing inherently wrong with a monogamous relationship, of course - but the truth is, this structure is just one sliver of a big, complicated, messy, beautiful spectrum of the ways that people are living and loving today. So, where are all of the love stories that don’t fit into the boy-meets-girl mold? Who wrote these rules, and why are we all following them?

Told in three parts, Love Without Sex explores:

  1. The “mononormative” culture we all live in and how it came to be
  2. True stories of nontraditional romance and family structure
  3. Asexuality and its implications on our understanding of love

Combining her personal experience with expert research and interviews with fascinating people who are “loving outside the lines” in their own ways, Johnson shows how love can stretch beyond traditional ideas of romance and sex to enrich our lives. This groundbreaking Audible Original will educate and entertain, proving that a broader understanding of love can benefit us all; from married couples, to young people stumbling through the ever-changing dating scene, and beyond.

Uniquely You

As a heterosexual, monogamous woman, this book was very informative on aspects of love that I did not know much about. It continually sparked my interest to know more and forced me to think about many of these topics more in depth. Even if you don’t live a polyamorous lifestyle, I highly recommend giving this a listen. It will help you to reevaluate how you choose to be loved and love, and it will also help you to understand other people better. I’d love to keep this conversation going. All of the people featured in the book sound lovely, and I crave more people in my life that share these life views. Also, this book made me strike up a conversation with my partner about living with another couple!

Is it their life or yours?

This audiobook covers a topic most would rather avoid. But whose life is it anyway? And I think there is more to discuss where this book leaves off. Say those who still want sex, however, they physically are unable to. And there is more to be said of those who want more partners without a change to the current life they live. What if that is a change to the current relationship. How would one go about addressing that?

I want everyone I love to read this!

This book helped me define things I didn't know were undefined in myself; things about my sexuality and how I love different people in different ways. I also appreciated the information on asexuality, it's a topic I didn't know I needed to know more about and that everyone needs to know more about. Thank you Sophie!

refreshing look into different ways to love

I really enjoy this book and it gave me different viewpoints on relationships. I only didn't give it five stars because the author congratulates yourself a lot. with that being said it still did not take away from the book overall.

Great point of view and a different way to look at love and friendship

This was well written. I loved the interviews and the different perspectives of each person that shared. It shows all relationships are different and the way people love is different from relationship to relationship. Well done!

lots of voices

Great book with lots of different voices, experiences. Great conversation starters, especially for those of us already in the community or interested in joining.

Only criticism is the interviews are so much quieter than the narration I had to constantly adjust the volume.
