Ecolul 19 este o alta planeta. Iti trebuie un anume spirit de aventura ca sa te intorci acolo, asumandu-ti riscul de a trai, zi de zi, exact ca oamenii vremii, de a te obisnui cu felul lor energic de a fi, cu regulile lor de conversatie, cu numeroasele lor obiecte de imbracaminte obligatoriu de purtat in acelasi timp pe unul si-acelasi trup, cu caii si cu servitorii lor, cu inima lor moale si cu taria lor de caracter, cu oala lor de noapte si cu balurile lor, cu teribilele lor pistoale si cu neajutorarea ingrozitoare in fata bolii, cu miasmele, cu parfumurile si cu sarurile lor, cu puricii si plosnitele dezgustatoare din hanurile lor, cu privatele din curte, cu scrisorile lor enorme si cu felul atat de direct in care ti se adreseaza chiar tie, cititorule, in romanele lor. Dar riscul cel mare este sa te deprinzi cu increderea lor absoluta intr-un viitor care tie, celui venit de acolo, din viitorul in care credeau ei atat de frumos, iti strange inima. Daca ajungi sa crezi si tu in el, ca ei, reintoarcerea acasa ar putea fi plina de dezamagiri si regrete.

Doua idei fixe nu pot sta concomitent laolalta în mintea omului, asa dupa cum doua corpuri nu pot ocupa acelas loc în spatiu, în acelas timp. Trei, sapte si asul alungara repede chipul batrânei moarte din închipuirea lui Hermann. Trei, sapte si asul nu-i ieseau din minte si-i reveneau mereu pe buze. Când vedea o fata tânara, spunea: Cât e de zvelta!... Un adevarat trei de cupa. Daca era întrebat cât e ceasul, raspundea: Sapte fara cinci minute. Toti barbatii burduhanosi îi reaminteau de as. Trei, sapte si asul îl însoteau în somn, luând diferite înfatisari.

Si nu vine singur, aduce cu sine un arhivar devenit celebru cu ocazia unui accident provocat de betie, o guvernanta mototoala care este supusa unui test cinic, un functionar care, impins de aburii betiei, ii cere socoteala fostului sau sef, un batran demn si important nevoit sa solicite ajutor pentru nepotul sau neispravit, un functionar sfrijit care se ploconeste in fata fostului sau coleg, ajuns om mare, o actrita ingenua care asteapta declaratia unui comic sacait insa de lipsa unui pahar de vodca, un contraamiral care este invitat la o nunta doar datorita rangului sau, un croitor care traieste din hazul amintirilor, acceptandu-si resemnat umilinta de dragul lor, un raufacator inocent care nu intelege ce fatalitate l-a adus in sala de judecata.

"Iata, tovarasi, raspunsul la toate problemele noastre. El se rezuma la un singur cuvînt: OMUL! Numai daca scapam de Om, numai atunci produsul muncii noastre o sa ne apartina.
