Publisher's summary

James R. Smith, Ph.D., a retired educator and psychotherapist, grew up in California (and now lives in Bandon, Oregon) and has been fishing for eighty years (since he was four years old). This memoir is emotionally honest, very detailed about fishing, and informative about so many kinds of fish. Fishermen will relate, and people who don't actually fish but enjoy human-interest stories and nature will enjoy this book. What makes this book come alive is that it includes over one hundred photos, most of which are in color. There are photos of fish, of family and friends, of scenery, and most impressive, photos of Jim (and friends and family) with huge fish hanging from scales with signs telling the kind of fish and how large.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR (in his words): At times, I occasionally think about Hemingway’s classic novella, The Old Man and the Sea. It describes Santiago, a Cuban fisherman who loves the sea and the challenge of fishing for marlin. I also share his feelings about the beautiful sea and its deep sea fishing. My passion for fishing has given me good times from the age of 4 to 84. I have caught various kinds of fish: albacore tuna, bluefin tuna, marlin, thrasher sharks, stingrays, and even trout in many states and countries: California, Massachusetts, Hawaii, Oregon, and Mexico.
Friends often call me the fishing storyman because of my various stories. Whether it's about “Chapter 1: The First Fish Caught” or “Chapter 20: Visiting the Biggest Fish at the Western White House,” I hope readers of the book will enjoy these stories. I loved both telling and writing them.
