About this listen

In this absorbing new entry in the acclaimed New York Times best-selling series, Scotland Yard's Ian Rutledge is caught up in a twisted web of vengeance and murder.

On the north coast of Cornwall, an apparent act of mercy is repaid by an arrest for murder. Four young women have been accused of the crime. A shocked father calls in a favor at the Home Office. Scotland Yard is asked to review the case.

However, Inspector Ian Rutledge is not the first inspector to reach the village. Following in the shoes of a dead man, he is told the case is all but closed. Even as it takes an unexpected personal turn, Rutledge will require all his skill to deal with the incensed families of the accused, the grieving parents of the victim, and local police eager to see these four women sent to the infamous Bodmin Gaol. Then why hasn't the killing stopped?

With no shred of evidence to clear the accused, Rutledge must plunge deep into the darkest secrets of a wild, beautiful, and dangerous place if he is to find a killer who may - or may not - hold the key to their fate.

A lovely, light, murder mystery

What did you like best about this story?

It had enough twists and turns to keep it interesting.

What does Simon Prebble bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Simon Prebble is an experienced reader (and, I suspect, a heavy smoker :) ) It's a good voice for the period and the setting.

Any additional comments?

It made me want to read more of the Inspector Rutledge series.

Mystery to the end

I had to force myself to put this book down to get other things done. I anxiously read to find out "who done it"? Great story. The narrator was perfect, as usual.

a good one!

Prebble is a great reader. This book benefitted from the more limited appearance of Hamish. The plot, like many of the Todd books, is totally outlandish. But more happens, and less of the book is spent repeating the evidence over & over.

Narration makes this a 5* production

The writing team has again given fans an excellent and atmospheric trip to Cornwall to deal with numerous murders.

Simon Prebble has used his gift for narration to turn a good book into a stellar 5* listening experience. I’m looking forward to the next in the series.

an interesting story and a good performance

Another interesting story in the series of detective Ian Rutledge, with the usual relationships related to World war I but in a general sense to the overall horrors of war everywhere. This story goes back to Cornwall where the detective is faced with a series of murders that he has to solve with some interesting twists that finally tie everything together. it also involves some other characters that have some history with the inspector.
