About this listen

The original Spiritual Midwifery, published in 1976, introduced an entire generation of young women to the possibility of home birth and breast feeding. It also breathed new life into the all-but-vanished field of midwifery.

The current edition of this classic book on home birth is now an audiobook, with updated information on the safety of natural childbirth, new birthing stories, and the most recent statistics on births managed by The Farm Midwives.

Ina May also provides new information about potentially dangerous techniques routinely used in hospitals during and after birth, as well as the latest findings about vaginal birth after cesarean (VBAC). Improved instructions for handling breech births are also given. Included are stories of working with Amish women, showing a different culture with a similar appreciation for natural childbirth.

Spiritual Midwifery is skillfully narrated by Camille Mazant.

All figures and diagrams referenced in the narration are included in the supplementary PDF.

This audiobook was produced and published by Echo Point Books & Media, an independent bookseller in Brattleboro, Vermont.

Absolutely amazing!

I am in love and I will listen to this book over and over. The narrator has such a calm and soothing voice and I would have preferred that she narrated Ina Mae’s Guide to Childbirth as well. Highly recommend if you’re interested in natural childbirth.

Poor narration of a beautiful book

The book holds a multitude of valuable information and perspective on birth. it was disappointing to hear many terms incorrectly pronounced including midwifery. Ina May is such an inspiration due to her ability to use scientific evidence and wisdom of her experience to provide safe birth and education.

Pronunciation.

Please have this reread by someone who is familiar with medical terminology so that those who are listening and learning from it may get the full benefit.

Very inspirational and informative

Great stories and information for mothers, their partners and midwives. OB's Should read up on how to support mothers in their birthing journey and to interfere as little as possible. This would create a much improved outcome for mothers and babies which would have an impact on society as a whole.

Amazing Stories Beautifully Read

Camille Mazant does justice to these inspiring stories. I learned so much about different people's processes of natural birth and genuinely enjoyed listening to her reading. Ina May Garten has done and seen some amazing things; she is a veritable wealth of knowledge and we are lucky she's shared so much of it in this work! I received this product in exchange for an honest review

Was a decent read

While the content was helpful, but audio wasn't very engaging. Also, some of the stories overlapped with another book by Ina May. So, some things just did not feel new. Was still an interesting and empowering read.

Powerful & Enlightening

I read Spiritual Midwifery during my postpartum thourney and found it so validating and thoughtful. It helped me recover and process my LO's birth. I love that this book found me at such a poignant time, but I would recommend to anyone because it offers insight into a topic that we often don't understand enough about: normal birth. Some parts were a little dry for a lay reader, such as what tools are needed to bring to a birth, but I dont regret listening. I found it kind of interesting. So give this book a try, no matter if you are a midwife or doctor, doula, mom or mom-to-be, partner, friend or not much connected to the world of birth at all.
