About this listen

The memories you least like to think about have more of a hold on you than you realize… and EMDR can change that.

Whether you’re a therapist or someone searching for new emotional healing, your goal is to address trauma.

To be effective, you need to engage the creative brain… and that’s where Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) comes in.

EMDR is designed to ease the distress you associate with traumatic memories, combining cognitive, somatic, and emotion-focused therapies with bilateral stimulation—usually guided eye movements.

The result?

The way you perceive events changes, giving you a more balanced understanding of yourself and the world around you.

It has extraordinary power, and simply learning how it works can change the way you experience yourself, even without pinpointing specific trauma.

Written by a licensed psychologist and EMDR therapist, it is not designed to replace therapy, but to give you relief and a pathway back to your true self.

Inside, you’ll discover:

  • Coping strategies to develop before engaging in EMDR
  • Clear guidance for finding the memories affecting you most deeply
  • An introduction to bilateral stimulation and how it helps
  • Step-by-step guidance for processing trauma through EMDR
  • How art can be combined with EMDR—and why this is so effective
  • Why your relationships may have traumatized you more than you realize… and how to apply EMDR to relationship problems
  • The secret to using EMDR to improve performance
  • All your most pressing questions answered—with a wealth of resources for more information

And much more.

Fascinating

This book helped me to overcome my apprehension regarding EMDR. I have explored bilateral stimuation in other aspects of my life, like walking meditation. I wanted to understand this better and to better apply the principles of EMDR to my regular practice. A very useful book indeed.

A New Way To Heal!

I’ve been curious about EMDR, and this audiobook made it sound both interesting and helpful. I like how it explains how to prepare for the process and find the memories that might be holding you back. The idea of using eye movements to change how you think about things is so unique, and I can’t wait to explore it more. I haven’t started all of the tools and tips yet, but this feels like a great way to work on emotional healing and personal growth.

Empowered Techniques

This audiobook does a great job breaking down self-EMDR in a way that's easy to understand. It felt approachable, not like you needed to be an expert to try the techniques. I liked how it focused on managing emotions and building stronger connections with others; it wasn't all about the trauma itself. The mix of practical strategies and encouragement made it feel doable, even for someone new to this kind of work. Some parts could use more examples, but overall, it's a solid starting point for anyone wanting to take steps toward healing on their own. It left me feeling hopeful about what's possible.

Help is here!

I’m familiar with EMDR—having had a couple of sessions with two therapists. But I didn’t really understand the “why” and “how” of what was going on. I certainly didn’t think about carrying on the process by myself! Dr. Deborah Cox’s book explains how the process works and how I can “try this at home”—all clearly articulated, but without too many theoretical details. Anyone can do the suggested exercises — without fancy equipment or unnecessary expense. Thankful to have access to this self-help guide!!

Great tool for promoting client autonomy

This is a wonderful book to assist therapists in teaching client's self help using EMDR. It would be a wonderful tool for anyone interested in using the EMDR modality to heal. While I would not recommend going into a major trauma memory alone, Self-EMDR can be appropriate and so helpful on something like the death of a pet. The author explains how to use EMDR safely and writes in detail on how to get re-grounded if you find yourself outside your window of tolerance.

Integrating artwork and EMDR

EMDR has been a major force in trauma treatment for many years. In this audiobook, Dr. Cox provides relevant, very listenable information about EMDR. However, she’s gone a step further and combined her education and training as both a psychologist and an artist to develop an innovative technique for self-administration. I was initially hesitant to hear about self-administered treatment out of concern that trauma survivors might experience challenges without adequate external supports. However, Dr. Cox does provide direction regarding who might or might not be suited, how to approach this technique slowly, use of a supportive partner, what to do if feeling ungrounded or otherwise off balance, and when to seek professional help. Her use of creating art as a more tactile, subconscious means of addressing trauma presents an approach to facilitating a deeper and more meaningful understanding of trauma's impact on the psyche, with a focus towards personal growth. I absolutely see recommending this book for trauma survivors seeking an understanding of EMDR or who wish to pursue this form of treatment, preferably with the support of a professional therapist on hand and as needed and particularly when addressing more serious trauma (i.e. "capital T"). Also appreciated is her use of varied case studies, many exercises (with examples), and various external references and resources. A solid, easily understandable, valuable resource.

Great information and tools

I was amazed at how fascinating and transformative the information in this book is, it opens a door to healing past trauma in a way that feels approachable and deeply effective. I cannot wait to use it.

This book also explores the surprising ways relationships may contribute to trauma and provides tools for addressing these issues through EMDR. Perhaps most powerful is the message that you don’t need to pinpoint specific traumas to begin benefiting from the principles of EMDR—simply understanding its mechanisms can be life-changing.
