Alexander the Great's sudden death has left his vast empire in chaos. War rages, cities fall and the lives of thousands are torn apart as his former generals struggle for a share. Rome, AD 67. Vespasian is tasked with the impossible: should he quell the revolt in Judaea, as the emperor Nero has instructed? If his conquest succeeds, he risks becoming the sole object of the emperor's jealousy. If he fails, then his punishment will be severe. But Nero has committed suicide. Sabinus, Vespasian's brother, is caught between the warring factions of Aulus Vitellius, a cruel opportunist, and the noble Marcus Salvius Otho, who finds himself severely outnumbered.

AD 58. Rome is in turmoil once more. Emperor Nero has surrounded himself with sycophants, and together they rampage by night through the city. Meanwhile, Nero's extravagance has reached new heights. The Emperor's spending is becoming profligate at the same time as the demands of keeping the provinces subdued have become increasingly unaffordable. Could Nero withdraw from Britannia, and at what price for the Empire?

Rome, AD 63. Vespasian has been ordered to a far-flung empire in Africa to free 200 Roman citizens who have been enslaved by a desert kingdom. But when Vespasian reaches the city, he discovers tensions spilling over into bloody chaos. Battling thirst and exhaustion, Vespasian must help the Romans escape, their only route to survival a desperate race across a barren desert with a hoard of heavily armed rebels at their backs. Meanwhile, back in Rome, Rome's elite fear for their lives as Emperor Nero's extravagance goes unchecked.

Rome, AD 51: Vespasian brings Rome's greatest enemy before the emperor. After eight years of resistance, the British warrior Caratacus has been caught. But Agrippina, Emperor Claudius' wife, pardons Caratacus. Claudius is a drunken fool, and Narcissus and Pallas, his freedmen, are battling for control of his throne. Separately,they decide to send Vespasian east to Armenia to defend Rome's interests. Meanwhile the East is in turmoil.

A. D. 68: Vespasian soll eine Revolte in Judäa beenden. Eine ausweglose Situation: Ist er erfolgreich, wird er den ewigen Neid des wahnsinnigen Kaisers Nero auf sich ziehen. Ist er es nicht, wird die Strafe für ihn verheerend sein. Vespasian weiß nicht, dass Nero in seiner Abwesenheit Selbstmord beging und damit Rom in politischen Aufruhr versetzte. Ein leerer Thron in Rom, eine Armee unter Vespasians Befehl: Ist seine Zeit jetzt gekommen? Die Zeit des Aufstiegs, des Sieges - der Erfüllung zahlloser Prophezeiungen? Wann wird Vespasian sich den Purpur umlegen?

63 n. Chr.: Vespasian ist Statthalter von Africa. Jenseits der Wüste, im Königreich der Garamanten, soll er 500 römische Bürger aus der Sklaverei befreien. Kaiser Neros Erwartungen zu enttäuschen, ist keine Option. Doch in dem Staat trifft er auf eine versklavte Bevölkerung kurz vor der Revolte. Vespasian flieht mit den römischen Bürgern durch die endlose, lebensfeindliche Wüste. Ein schier unmögliches Unterfangen... In Rom kennen derweil Neros Ausschweifungen keine Grenzen.

A.D. 58: Kaiser Nero hat einen Tross von Speichelleckern um sich versammelt, und zusammen wüten sie des Nachts in Roms ungeschützten Straßen. Neros Ausgaben sind uferlos, zugleich ist die Kontrolle über Britannien kaum noch zu bezahlen. Kann Nero sich aus der Provinz zurückziehen, ohne als Verlierer dazustehen? Panisch versuchen die römischen Investoren, ihren Reichtum aus Britannien abzuziehen. Vespasian muss noch einmal auf die Insel. Dort wird er in eine tödliche Rebellion verwickelt, angeführt von der unerbittlichen und furchtlosen Königin und Heerführerin Boudicca.

321 v. Chr., zwei Jahre nach Alexanders Tod: Das beeindruckendste Reich, das die Welt je gesehen hat, ist ohne Führung. Chaos regiert in den makedonischen Gebieten Asiens und im Mittelmeerraum. Der bisherige Regent Perdikkas wurde von seinen eigenen Offizieren erdolcht, und Alexanders einstige Gefährten ringen mit allen Mitteln um die Macht. Um Makedonien zusammenzuhalten, ruft der betagte Antipatros – zu Alexanders Lebzeiten Regent für den europäischen Teil des Reiches – zu einer Konferenz in Triparadeisos auf.

Als er seinen letzten Atemzug tat, in einem Raum mit sieben Leibwächtern, benannte er keinen Nachfolger. Wer übernimmt nun die Macht, ohne einen rechtmäßigen Erben? Die Nachricht vom unerwarteten Tod des nur 33-jährig verstorbenen Herrschers verbreitet sich im Land, und ein skrupelloser Kampf um den Thron beginnt. Ein gefährliches Netz aus Intrigen und Lügen breitet sich aus. Allianzen werden geknüpft und gebrochen.
