L'ultimo romanzo, incompiuto, di Kafka, la cui stesura ebbe inizio nel gennaio 1922 (l'autore non ha ancora quarant'anni e ne mancano due alla morte per tubercolosi faringea) e proseguì fino al settembre dello stesso anno. Non esiste una versione definitiva dell'autore che anzi dispose che il manoscritto fosse distrutto. Più che un romanzo "Il castello" si può definire un insieme di frammenti in cui il personaggio K., arrivato a un non-luogo, un misero villaggio immerso nel freddo, tenta di avvicinarsi alla meta, il Castello appunto.

In the story, an ape named Red Peter, who has learned to behave like a human, presents to an academy the story of how he effected his transformation. The story was first published by Martin Buber in the German monthly Der Jude, along with another of Kafka's stories, "Jackals and Arabs" ("Schakale und Araber"). The story appeared again in a 1919 collection titled Ein Landarzt (A Country Doctor).
