Why Setting Boundaries Without Guilt is Not Mean—It’s Love

Setting boundaries isn’t about pushing people away—it’s about protecting your inner peace, honouring your energy, and building stronger, more positive relationships. In this episode, I share how I used to say yes out of guilt, not love, and how learning to set boundaries changed everything.

You’ll hear how common myths around boundaries keep us stuck in people-pleasing cycles, and how to start building boundaries in everyday life. Whether it's guarding your time, managing family expectations, or creating emotional safety, you'll find simple ways to get started.

And most importantly, you’ll see how boundaries don’t stand alone. We build positive relationships by using boundaries alongside assertive expression and conflict resolution. Together, they help us speak up, stand strong, and show others how to treat us with care.

    Key Takeaways
    • Boundaries are not mean—they are an act of self-respect and love.

    • Because no one taught us healthy boundaries, we often feel guilty when we start setting them.

    • Common myths—like “boundaries are selfish” or “they hurt others”—can stop us from honouring our needs.

    • There are many types of boundaries: time, emotional, energy, conversation, family, social media, and more.

    • You can start setting boundaries with small, simple changes—like pausing before saying yes or limiting interruptions during personal time.

    • Assertive communication and conflict resolution work together with boundaries to build positive relationships.

    • You are teaching your children and grandchildren how to honour themselves by showing them what respectful love looks like.

These aren't confessions of failure—they're moments of growth. Looking back, I can see that my parenting style was shaped by fear, habit, and love… but not always by awareness. From yelling instead of speaking kindly to holding on too tightly, these life lessons helped me become a better parent—and now, a more mindful grandparent.

If you've ever wondered, "Am I doing this right?" or "Is it too late to change?"—this episode is for you.

In this episode, I share five life lessons I learned from my parenting style—things I truly wish I had understood earlier.

This episode is filled with gentle insights and practical reminders to help you build stronger relationships with your children or grandchildren—starting today.

    💡 What You'll Learn:
    • The difference between passive, aggressive, and assertive communication—and why modelling the right one matters.

  • How to Overcome Self-doubt and Live an Empowered Life | Brian Seth Hurst

How to Overcome Self-doubt and Live an Empowered Life | Brian Seth Hurst

In this inspiring episode of Lessons for Life with Gramma Kate, I sit down with author, coach, and meta-practical man Brian Seth Hurst to discuss the power of beliefs—how they shape our lives and how we can transform them to live with more courage, authenticity, and purpose.

Brian shares the deeply personal and spiritual journey behind writing his book Whole, how he created a transformational workbook, and why our self-talk and habits matter more than we think. With stories, wisdom, and practical tools, this conversation is a beautiful reminder that we all have the power to change.

    Key Takeaways:
    • Beliefs shape reality: We unconsciously absorb beliefs from the most influential people in our lives—but we can rewrite them.

    • The Belief Grid exercise: A powerful tool for identifying limiting beliefs and consciously choosing new ones.

    • Self-talk matters: Catching and reframing how we speak to ourselves is a key step in overcoming self-doubt.

    • Habits vs. Patterns: Habits are actions; patterns are deeper behaviours often rooted in emotional responses.

    • Feeling is healing: Journaling your feelings, even the uncomfortable ones, helps you understand yourself and break harmful cycles.

    • Children are always watching: As parents and role models, our actions speak louder than our words. Be the example of courage, growth, and compassion.

Why Boundaries Matter Boundaries help you feel safe, respected, and in control of your own life.Without boundaries, narcissists may take advantage of your kindness and push you into doing things you don’t want to do.Setting boundaries isn’t about being mean—it’s about protecting yourself. 3 Boundaries You MUST Set with a Narcissist Care Without Carrying Their Burden Problem: Narcissists try to make you responsible for their emotions. Solution: Say, “I care about you, but I’m not responsible for your feelings.” You don’t have to fix their problems or feel guilty for saying no. Stop Defending Yourself – Your Boundaries Matter Problem: They might question or challenge your boundary. Solution: Keep it short—“I’m not available for that.” or “No.” You don’t need to explain yourself. The more you explain, the more a narcissist tries to break your boundary. Set Time Limits – Protect Your Energy Problem: They demand too much of your time and attention. Solution: “I’m only available to talk on [your terms].” If they ignore your limit, repeat it and reduce contact if needed. What to Expect When Setting Boundaries Pushback will happen! Here’s how narcissists react and what to do: They try to guilt you. Example: “I guess you don’t care about me anymore.” What to do: Stay firm. Recognize guilt as manipulation and don’t fall for it. They twist the story and blame you. Example: “You’re the problem! You’re making things difficult!” What to do: Don’t argue. Repeat your boundary and walk away. Narcissists ignore your boundary completely. Example: They keep calling or showing up unannounced. What to do: Enforce it again. If the narcissist continues, limit contact even more.
