Publisher's summary
Are you curious about the history of democracy? Or maybe you wonder how democracies die?
Studying history will help give you a better understanding of the origins of democracy, how it shaped our current laws and policies, and how democracy works now. Which begs the question: what does history tell us about democracy? Where did democracy start? What inspired and ignited an entire democratic system to govern societies? In order to understand today's democracy, we need to start from its earliest beginnings by understanding the works of the ancient philosophers who laid the foundations of democracy from the early days.
Even looking at the democracy around the world today, it's clear that there are degrees to which countries choose to adhere or stray from democratic ideals. Understanding where these ideals developed from and the development of democracy over time is essential to determining what endangers these ideals in the present.
In this book, you'll discover:
- The early years of democracy and the evolution of democracy through the ages
- Socrates, Plato, and Aristotle–Greek philosophers whose contributions to political theory helped to shape democracy as we now know it today
- The democratic ideas in Ancient Rome that helped design some of the foundations of modern governments
- How the Roman Republic created a legacy that continues to endure–and what we can learn from its downfall
- The roots of America’s democracy and democracy in America now
- Case studies–a comparison of democracies around the world today
- The rising threats to democracy jeopardizing the systems that have been in place in some form for centuries
And much more.
By understanding the principles behind Democracy and its evolution worldwide, we have a better chance of achieving "a government of the people, by the people, and for the people".

Ever tried a 'quick' grocery run with your toddler, only to feel like you’ve walked into a circus, minus the entertaining clowns and popcorn? I know that scenario all too well. Parenting isn't about living up to everyone else's expectations but rather tuning into and accommodating our children's unique needs. This journey revealed something universal: our parenting struggles are real, and they're shared. Whether it's the frantic morning rush, persuading a child to eat their greens, or navigating an explosive tantrum in public, parenting is ripe with opportunities for growth.

ADHD may be the defining diagnosis of our time. According to the latest data, more than 10 percent of American children (that’s 7.1 million kids) have been diagnosed with ADHD. And the number of stimulant prescriptions for adults in their 30s has shot up nearly threefold since 2012. In recent years, this explosion in demand has combined with other factors to create a widespread stimulant shortage in the US. In the second installment of Backfired, cohosts Leon Neyfakh and Arielle Pardes look at the unintended consequences of the ADHD industry, and trace the surprising path that brought us here.

The ancient Toltecs believed that life, as we perceive it, is a dream. We each live in our own personal dream, and these come together to form the dream of the planet, or the world in which we live. Problems arise when our perception of the dream becomes clouded with negativity, drama, and judgment (of ourselves and others), because it's in these moments of suffering that we have forgotten that we are the architects of our own reality and we have the power to change our dream if we choose.

The Antidote is a series of journeys among people who share a single, surprising way of thinking about life. What they have in common is a hunch about human psychology: that it’s our constant effort to eliminate the negative that causes us to feel so anxious, insecure, and unhappy. And that there is an alternative "negative path" to happiness and success that involves embracing the things we spend our lives trying to avoid.

It's so cool to see how the idea of democracy and democratic ideologies have developed over the centuries and turned into what we know today as the United States of America. Highly recommend.

history is the best teacher
This book helps you dig deep into the democratic party and their principals, how they formed, what they stand for, and how they've become today. It doesn't matter who you support. Even you are on the other side, it's always good to know all the players on the table I think. As ancient chinese wisdom has it that, it's not wise to listen to just one side of the story. you need both sides of the story to know the full picture. something like that. i really enjoyed listening to this book.

This book made me give a damn about democracy.
Never thought I'd get hyped about democracy, but here we are. It's like a crazy time-travel adventure from ancient Greece to now, and it actually made sense of all the political mess we're in.
Reading this got me fired up. I went from not caring to feeling like I need to do something. It's wild how stuff from thousands of years ago still matters today.
If you're tired of feeling lost when people talk politics, grab this book. It's not boring, I swear. You'll come out feeling smarter and maybe even ready to vote. Trust me, it's worth it!

Unpacking Democracy
If you’re interested in democracy and its history, "Democracy From Then to Now" by Eric Nilsen offers a thorough exploration of the topic. The book covers the contributions of ancient Greek philosophers like Socrates and Plato, the impact of the Roman Republic on modern legal systems, and how democracy evolved through the Medieval Ages and into modern times.
Nilsen also highlights the differences between various democratic systems, including comparisons between the U.S. and Nordic countries, which is intriguing. His discussion on current threats to democracy is relevant and timely, and he provides a broad overview of the challenges faced by democratic systems today.
However, the book didn’t shy away from more controversial subjects, and I think that some listeners would detect an anti-Trump stance that is so common in modern media. Which means this book is a thrilling overview of democracy as well as the ongoing debates about democracy’s effectiveness—and it’s ability to survive—in the modern world.
It’s definitely a great read if you want to understand both the history and the ongoing challenges of democratic systems.

Winning the Democratic Debate in this Book!
Eric Nilsen's latest work offers a comprehensive exploration of democracy's evolution, tracing its roots from ancient Greece to its contemporary manifestations. Through meticulous research and engaging prose, Nilsen provides a compelling narrative that sheds light on the key figures, ideas, and events that have shaped our understanding of democratic governance.
One of the book's strengths lies in its ability to bridge the gap between historical context and contemporary relevance. Nilsen skillfully weaves together the contributions of ancient philosophers like Socrates, Plato, and Aristotle with the development of democratic systems in Rome and the medieval era. By examining these historical foundations, readers gain a deeper appreciation for the enduring principles and challenges that democracies continue to face.
A particularly thought-provoking aspect of the book is its analysis of the threats to democracy in the modern world. Nilsen offers a nuanced discussion of the factors that can undermine democratic institutions, including authoritarianism, inequality, and misinformation. By examining case studies from around the globe, he provides readers with a clearer understanding of the challenges that democracies must overcome to ensure their survival.
Overall, Eric Nilsen's book is a valuable contribution to the literature on democracy. It offers a comprehensive and engaging exploration of the subject, providing readers with a deeper understanding of its origins, development, and contemporary challenges. Whether you are a student of history, a political science enthusiast, or simply a concerned citizen, this book is a must-read.
