Publisher's summary

Amy Shah, MD, leading medical doctor and Instagram personality @fastingmd, shares her proven 5-step program for battling excessive hunger and food cravings by harnessing the power of psychobiotics and intermittent fasting.

“My mission is to revolutionize the way we think about hunger and nutrition, and to help people manage hunger and cravings and break free from the tyranny of diets and battles with food. I’ve seen my program work for people all over the world. And it will work for you, too.”—from the introduction by Dr. Amy Shah

Dr. Amy Shah kept hearing the same complaints from her patients: “I feel hungry all the time, even when I just ate.” “My cravings are out of control.” They were white-knuckling it through yet another diet plan, only to feel depleted, frustrated, and really effing hungry.

So she created I’m So Effing Hungry, a science-based plan designed to help you take charge of your health and your cravings, without feeling deprived. As Dr. Shah explains, cravings aren’t your fault—and eating a healthier diet isn’t just a matter of self-discipline or willpower. There are powerful biological forces at play in your body that govern your hunger levels and cravings.

Drawing on the emerging science of psychobiotics—healthy gut bacteria that help improve mood and regulate hunger, weight, and cravings—Dr. Shah has created a 5-step plan to help you make peace with food and your body:

STEP 1. REPLENISH: your body by eating more nourishing, mood-balancing foods.

STEP 2. REWIRE: your brain to undo the addiction pathways and cravings for processed foods.

STEP 3. RESET: your circadian rhythm to activate hunger hormones that reduce your appetite.

STEP 4. REFRESH: with a good night’s sleep, using proven good sleep habits used by the U.S. military.

STEP 5. RETRAIN: your body with exercise that regulates key neurotransmitters that influence our hunger response.

Complete with more than thirty delicious recipes and peppered with easy Hunger Hacks and Cravings Crushers—like eating walnuts to reduce hunger and getting direct sunlight first thing in the morning—I’m So Effing Hungry is a complete guide to help you reframe decades-old dieting patterns and stop fighting the scale.

Tried it, and it works!

I was introduced to this author while listening to a Mel Robbins podcast where she was interviewed. That lead to me getting this audiobook.

While much of the content of this book wasn’t new news, it did serve as a solid reminder of the principles of healthy eating on the brain body connection.

It did inspire me to double down on cutting out processed foods and encouraged me to incorporate the tips outlined throughout the book for the suggested period of 2 weeks.

I have to share that it has had an enormous, even life changing positive effect on my junk food addition, constant cravings and dreaded hunger! I feel amazing! Energised physically and emotionally much stronger!

(Only negative is the narration which is very off putting, borderline unlistenable intonation of voice)

Fantastic information

I enjoyed this book very much and I’m thankful for the information on how to care for your body mind and spirit. It so wonderful to find a book that is not focused on dieting but rather on how to fix the underlying problems. Thank you!

So refreshing!!

No miracles, no fads, just honest information that educates you instead of offering you too good to be true remedies! Loved the breakdown of sections and how to work on each to connect the dots in your own journey! Empowering!!

Great information!

The subject matter provided was good advice. She has extensive knowledge of the body, brain and s stomach. As well as how they work together. The tips, information, and recipes are included in a PDF. I love this addition to be able to go back and review them. Highly recommend.

Meh - boring version of other books

Not engaging. If you want to hear about all the bad choices we make with food, read something that’s scientifically engaging… not something that is a list of complaints about all the bad things the food industry does. We all know that stuff. The entire book has one core message: only eat fresh veggies, fruit and a little lean meat with occasional grains (aka Quinoa). This info is all news we’ve heard and there’s nothing interesting to the way she tells the story.

Great information based on science

This was great information and I appreciate Dr Amy’s mind/body/environment approach. The only downside is this book was not read by the author. Narrator did a fine job but Dr Amy’s voice and existing Instagram/online presence is why many followers read her book. Makes no sense not to take the time to read this herself.

Comprehensive detail of nutrition

The audiobook was easy to listen to. I am not new to learning about nutrition and felt I got a lot out of the book.

Boring

She talks so slowly and is overly technical. Hardly any new information. Not entertaining or informative.

Good, easy information to try

I liked that the things she is suggesting would be super easy to try. And they might not work for everyone but I like trying to be healthier. It can get expensive when someone recommends all kinds of supplements and machines and expensive stuff that in the end might not work great for you. But her suggestions were mostly free or diet changes that you already spend money on food so it’s not an added expense. I’m going to try a few of her recommendations and in a month or so, I’ll try a few more. It was a quick easy listen and I enjoyed it.
