All the key concepts are here

Everything I want my teenager to know about managing money is here.
Consider this an overview to get them thinking.
The details will still need to be discussed in person.
This was a little too much for my teenager, but an interested 14 or 15 year old may hang in there.
It's new, so I'll forgive the fact that chapter 3 repeats itself halfway through. I'm sure the author will fix that by the time you read this review.
I wish I had this information when I was a teen.

Worth the Time for Advancing Money Skills

As a parent, I was looking for a book to help my 14-year-old daughter develop a better understanding of money management. I'm so glad I found Smart Money Lessons for Teens. This book is a fantastic resource that makes learning about finance fun and engaging.

The author does a great job of breaking down complex financial concepts into easy-to-understand terms. My daughter loved the relatable examples and practical exercises. She's already started creating a budget and learning about the basics of investing.

I appreciate that this book covers a wide range of topics, from budgeting and saving to investing and planning for the future. It's a valuable tool for helping teens build a strong financial foundation. If you're looking for a book to teach your teen about money, I highly recommend Smart Money Lessons for Teens.

Helpful information and suggestions, but ...

The Good: Plenty of good information on various topics should be valuable to teens.

The Bad: Too many topics are covered at the expense of depth of coverage of the most important topics. For instance, understanding the crippling power of high-interest credit card debt could have been driven home much better with a short example. If someone had a $1,000 credit card debt with a 20% interest rate and only made the minimum $25 payment each month, how long would it take to pay off the debt and how much interest would have been paid over the lifetime of the debt? An example like that could really help one understand the power of compounding. Keeping the length of this book roughly the same could be accomplished by removing topics teens do not need to know about at age 13 or 14. Do they really need to know about estate planning at this stage of life?

The Ugly: One of the biggest money lessons for teens is arguably learning how to balance spending today vs. saving for tomorrow. To fully understand the true cost of today’s spending, one needs to understand how money saved can be invested and experience compound growth. In Chapter 21, there is an example claiming to illustrate compound growth. $100 is invested at 5% interest. It is claimed that the $100 investment would grow to $110 after two years. This wrong answer ignores the interest earned on the interest from investing in year number one. The answer shows no compound interest! Of course, the correct answer is $110.25. A proper example would also show how compounding over a long time period could add to something much more significant than 25 cents.

In summary, this could have been done much better. I deducted one star for the bad and was tempted to deduct more than one star for the ugly, as this really missed the mark on one of the most vital topics. Giving this book three stars is being a bit generous.
